CaFleureBon Profiles In American Perfumery: John Pegg of House of Kerosene + Dirty Flower Factory Draw

cafleurebon profiles in american perfumery

It has been exactly two years ago to the day since I started the CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery (July 3, 2011).  At the time, I had no idea the series would continue to grow and flourish, featuring over 60 American Olfactive Artists and Creative Directors and have its own Facebook Page.  Tommorow is the Fourth of July, Independence Day and to me John "Kerosenetrewth" Pegg of House of Kerosene is a livng symbol of the grit and perserverance of the  American Indie and Artisan Movement. His rise from Youtube video reviewer to a well respected perfumer who takes risks ,speaks his mind and gives 100 percent of his being to his perfumes and his clients, is an All American Story;  John is self taught, had no mentors and does not live on either the East or West Coast . John Pegg sets his own bar and it is a high one as he continues to push the boundaries of what American perfumery means in the 21 st century. –Michelyn Camen, Editor-In Chief

John Pegg of House of kerosene cafleurebon B&W

John Pegg, Amercan Perfumer

Profile: I was born among things of steel, resins and fabric: all belonging to the structure of a Detroit-made car. My parents worked in factories, my relatives worked in factories and so I started my life in, well, a factory. I grew up close to my brother, him being a year longer than myself, always with competition in mind. That mindset to always be better than everyone was instilled deep within at an early age, from the moment we played baseball together or army out in the woods. I seemed to remember that I always won and that included our weekly fights. The number one rule of engagement: No punching in the face. We couldn't let our parents know we fought. Brothers.

In school, I enjoyed sports and artistic things. Mostly, I loved to draw and paint. And after school was done, I had no idea what do with my life, so I followed with what I knew. Reluctantly, I enlisted into a factory, and began building a million parts…of the same thing. Over and over and over again. It didn't take long before I worked my way up the chain and into an office and found myself doing the same work, over and over again, ordering the materials to build the parts I assembled, as a purchasing agent. My mind isn't built to do the same thing repeated. At the speed of light, I get very bored.

Throughout the factory life, I managed to stay sane by doing creative things on the side. I composed and played music. I was taught guitar and then learned bass (which I still love to play). While most people during downtime played solitaire at work, I wrote stories; a lot of them! They were mostly abstract stories with twist endings. I always wanted to outdo my last story. A few of my works were published on webzines, but my most proud accomplishment is the 1/3 of a novel about a man and his talking fork. True, it's not finished but one day…

At night after work, I would wrench on motorcycles. I love most things vintage and marvel at the mechanics of early Japanese made bikes. The early Honda's were bullet-proof reliable. The cold metal and rusty bolts felt like heaven in my fingers after typing on a computer keyboard all day.  All I ever wanted to do was to do something unique, the opposite life of a factory. And then it happened. I became a perfumer. The way I attack life, is by the underlings. If I can't figure out how to cook something, build it, put it together, I don't quit until I do. I'm a bit tenacious like that. My fiancee would definitely agree.

I always loved smells. From fresh baked bread, to newly mowed lawn, scent has always made me stop and take notice. It's something to be savored and cherished. I think all of the five senses are equally important. They play off each other. When I walk a trail through the dewy woods, the browns and greens along with the damp aroma dance as one. I truly enjoy nature. It's what I believe defines my creativity.  In Michigan, I am surrounded by beautiful things: forests, deep waters, and most of the time, puffy white clouds ballooning along a blue sky. For me, it doesn't get any more American middle class than here. I'm proud of my Midwest hospitality upbringing.

On American perfumery: From the very beginning of my work as a perfumer, I wanted one main thing to come out of creations: Uniqueness. It was never in my make-up to copy someone else, which I believe is very much an American Artisan mentality. My competitive bone simply won't allow it. When it came time to figure out how to build perfume, I got to work like I would anything else: My nose to the freaking grind. I studied and researched and experimented late into many nights. How long does this oil last on paper? How long on skin? What about these two oil combinations? What about three? That smells like crap! That smells wonderful!  What I love about perfumery is that you are constantly creating something new. It was the opposite of a factory. It was more like cooking music. You have different notes on the guitar, but the song is made up of chords to make a recipe of something beautiful. A bad chord, a crap accord… .That's what being an American perfumer means to me work your tail off and love with all the freedom we have. Love until it hurts and perfume until your nose bleeds.

For the person wearing my scents, I try to let it be an experience. Most of the creations have initial blasts of a nose-punch, but they represent my personality in a way. I am 96% of the time, mild-mannered, the other 4%, bit nuts

Favorite American Artist:  Some of my favorite American bands that influenced my musical tastes like, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Jane's Addiction, they also influenced my perfume too. Bands like these have sweet distorted harmony among their chords, yet they are rough around the edges. Like my perfumes.  I like that.

  • This brand has a nice retro vibe. I have never tried anything of theirs before and Id like to win the sample set. I am reminded a little bit or DS Durga. Im in the US.

  • What I find amusing of this house is that the public has seen the perfumer grow from being an aficionado and reviewer to taking the passion into production and gaining a following. I would choose the sampler set if lucky enough to win.

Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US and a “liker” of CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery on Facebook.

  • What I found fascinating about John Pegg was his work ethic. His approach to a project and determination to ‘nail’ it. Nose to the grindstone and that competitive edge. The success of something so often depends on that application and the follow through, getting through failure to a final success. I really admire that energy. Thanks for a great review here and a generous draw.I am international.

  • I’ve followed Kerosene long before he became an indie perfume via his YouTube channel. So I was very much aware of his creative pursuits in the musical arena ( he composed his own music intro/outro to his videos). I also knew that he liked motorcycles and had a job in an automobile factory. Information that John gladly shared in his very informative perfume reviews. What I found fascinating about John is his strict work ethic, keep at it until you nail it! If I win, I would love the sample pack of John’s perfumes. I’m in the US and thank you John and Cafleurebon for this wonderful draw. I have already liked Cafleurebon profiles on Facebook .

Congrats John on your success as a indie perfumer. Here’s to more scented concoctions . I wish you all the best!

  • I can not agree more with the Introduction to this piece. John does set his own bar and yes it’s high, thanks to his “competitive bone”. 🙂 I learned that John’s creative spirit can not and SHOULD no be contained. Guitar, bass, writing etc. can I put in a request for first copy of a first edition of the completed book, please. I can only imagine what the talking fork has to say 😉 I admire John’s uniqueness and his love of the senses and how they all orchestrate together. This is how it was intended, I am sure of that. I happen to know he loves the smell of fresh bread from a post on FB more than a year ago when I posted I was baking fresh homemade bread that day, his response, your house smells amazing 🙂 Thank You John, for this wonderful profile and a dip into your (treasured) private life. I wish you continued success and much creativity in the future. Happy 4th and I can not think of a better person to profile that signifies freedom.I am in the US and would love Dirty Flower Factory.

  • Elizabeth T. says:

Haha, 4% nuts… I like that. I love John’s attitude that clearly comes through in this interview. His fragrances sound so unique! I’m not a black licorice fan but remember reading about Black Vines a while back and was impressed. So glad to read about American perfumers during this 4th of July week! I’m in the US and would love to try the sample set. Thank you John and Cafleurebon!

  • What a fascinating person! I loved learning about the connection and influence music has had on his life and perfumes! I live in the US and always like your articles on FB. I would love the sampler set- thanks for the draw .—Tati

  • “A bad accord, a crap accord”, what’s not to like about thinking like that?
I would love this sampler set, I have tried only Unknown Pleasures. USA

  • Lionel Woods says:

Both John and I are from MI. What amazes me the most is that he really set out to accomplish this perfume thing and has done very well. Not to mention I would never imagine the uniqueness of his fragrances.

  • I like the the scents of John, have already tried 2-3 and they were all very interesting. I would like to win the sampler set 🙂 I’m in Germany.

  • I found the brothers fighting in secret interesting 🙂 I have brothers but we never had such an arrangement and in the end Mama knows all!!!
I used to watch the Kerosene youtube chanel, but i have yet to try any of his fragrances,
I would like to try the sampler set, I’m international,
    ty

  • I love the quote that his perfume has ‘sweet distorted harmony among their chords, yet they are rough around the edges’.
    Sound intriguing.
I have ‘liked’ the article and would love to win the sampler set as I am in Australia.

  • Ifi Genial says:

What I found fascinating about John Pegg is the very same John Pegg 🙂 what an amazing guy, so many different aspects within one single man so many searches (from all aspects of artistic expression up to motorcycles) he has his yin and yang in an absolute balance and control yet he likes to twist around things just to shake himself away from everyday routine and boredom! One thing for sure is that life next to him can be really interesting and I am more than certain that his artistic creations-perfumes are the same interesting to smell and even more to wear.
If I win I would love to experience the sample set. I live in EU (Greece) and I thank you for this draw!

  • Scentella says:

The entire profile screams of authenticity and independence, and a dose of distance from the often bourjois world of perfumery. Now I’m curious about the scents. In the EU.

  • I am a big Kerosene fangirl. I love the fact that his perfumes have an edge to them just like he does. They really seem to be a labor of love and an extension of himself.
I’m in the US and would love to win Dirty Flower Factory.

  • Kerosene fragrances has appealed to me from 2012 when I found they existed! Pitty, I only know Fields of Rubus which I love! John Pegg seems to have such a versatile personality and abilities that he would do greatly whatever he wishes to do! A novel about a man and his talking fork – well, that sounds odd enough for a perfumer with a factory background. But it surely makes him unique and experienced in many ways different than traditional perfumers.
Thank you for the draw! I am in the EU, Bulgaria, and consequently I am applying for the sampler set

  • RusticDove says:

I really dig John’s down to earth, non pretentious attitude and personality – plus he’s a truly talented artist. I am very pleased for him and his deserved success. I have been impressed with everything I have tried from his line and Copper Skies is one of my husband’s most favorite fragrances. He requested a bottle for his birthday last year, so of course I was happy to oblige and add a bottle to his growing collection. 🙂 I just recently had the opportunity to sample Santalum Slivers and it immediately went on my full bottle wish list. I live in the US and would love to try Dirty Flower Factory!

  • ringthing says:

I’m glad to see John Pegg featured in this series as I greatly admire his grit and determination to make a life based on his creative passions while surrounded by profitable work in manufacturing. I live a few miles from the Michigan state line and I’ve worked in the factories, everyone I know has experienced the mind numbing assembly line at some point. But Michigan is such a beautiful state with many treasures to discover that I can see it being a great source of inspiration. I’m a proud midwesterner too, and a big fan of Kerosene perfumes, so I would love to try Dirty Flower Factory. I’m in the US and have liked the Facebook profile page. Thanks for the lovely draw.

  • Cooking Music. That says it all. John is an amazing perfumer and just a really cool guy. I treasure my Bespoke from him, he created something so wonderfully beautiful and SO me that it was scary.
I would LOVE to try Dirty Flower and I live in the U.S.
    Thanks for the draw!!

  • Nancy Knows says:

What a fabulous profile! I have read so much about Kerosene on the fragrance boards, it was great to get to know the person behind the line. I found it fascinating that John loved the fine arts but worked in a factory to support himself. I share his taste in music too.

I’m dying to try Dirty Flower and I”m in the U.S. Thanks!

  • I actually like his competitiveness! 🙂 It has really being ingrained in him since young as you can tell from his descriptions of himself, and well I think we are similar in that aspect. But well for me, not much determination like him! 😛

I am from Singapore and hope to win the sample set! 🙂

liked the page on facebook too! 😀

  • I loved learning more about the man behind Kerosene – I like the way music influences his creations ( Unknown Pleasures is one of my favorite fragrances and Joy Division is one of my favorite bands 🙂 ) I am very excited to try Dirty Flower Factory and I liked the page on facebook.I live in the US.Thank you very much for the chance to win and for the great article.Happiest Fourth of July wishes to you all at Cafleurebon.

  • Enjoyed the part comparing notes and accords in perfume to notes and chords in music.
I would like a chance at the sample set. 🙂 US

  • What an interesting character! I’ve never tried any of his scents before but it seems to make sense (if that makes any sense) that he emerged from working in a field so automated and systematic to another that is totally creative and fluid. It is definitely inspiring! International reader here who would love to get her nose on Kerosene’s sample set. Thank you very much for sharing!

  • I liked his normality. He seemed like someone you would really enjoy a drink with because he was interested in so many things and I found it inspiring that he just followed what he loved. I have only tried one Kerosene fragrance (which I really like) and would have loved Dirty Flower Factory but since I am in the UK I will happily take the sample set!

  • Kim Morgan says:

I like that he likens both music and making perfume to cooking — I think that’s probably a good analogy. I think all art is like that. I’d love the sample set to be able to experience all of those “flavors”!

    US resident.

  • julesinrose says:

Perfect post for the 4th of July! John Pegg epitomizes a very American approach and attitude. “Humble” beginnings, self taught, hard work, rebel. I do believe he does do scent like his favorite bands did music.

I’d love to try his new scent. I have Black Vines and enjoy it.

I love the Profiles in American Perfumery series so much (and liked on FB, too, of course, a while ago!) Thanks for posting one for the holiday and Happy Independence Day to all!

  • What an interesting guy! It is so fascinating to learn about a perfumer’s motivations and inspirations. I would love to experience the sampler set and am a fan of the FB page. I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw.

  • Happy Independence Day! I had no idea that John Pegg was once a perfume reviewer, and was fascinated to learn that he is completely self-taught and still lives in Muchigan. (I miss the Midwest.) I’m in the US, and would love to try the Kerosene sample set.

  • I like how Kerosene fragrances reflect John’s life in Detroit, both inside the bottle and out. My favorite is Pretty Machine but I also like Copper Skies. I’m all for wearing my Doc’s and listening to In Utero while wearing a great fragrance reflective of the 90’s grunge era. I’m in the US and would love to try Dirty Flower Factory.

  • I find many things fascinating about mr Pegg. Playing music, writing stories, motorcycles, perfumes at last – and all this about one person. John is a very intrepid man and I respect such people like he.
I’m very attracted to the industrial spirit in his work which is expressed in the design of bottles and names.
I’ve liked the page on facebook 🙂
I’m international reader so my choice is sample set.
    Thanks for the draw!

  • John Pegg sounds like an iconoclast which is how I think about myself and those closest to me. What I admire about him most his his desire to break out of the mode he was born into. Despite having no experience or mentors, he just did it because he has a curious mind and desire to create things. A true American artist for sure!
I am in the US and would love to try the sample set. Thank you!

  • Sheena Amstel says:

I kept playing air guitar to smells like teen spirit
Interesting guy tells it like it is for realz
House of kerosene whips and roses is my favorite but it is discontinued
Do let’s go with sample set or dirty flower factory either I happy

  • John Pegg seems like a person you would love to sit with in the corner of a dark, rustic bar and talk to for hours over a good whiskey sour. Love that he writes, and that he always knew how to show younger bro who was boss (being the oldest I totally understand that!). I am in the USA, and would so love to try Dirty Flower Factory. Have also liked on FB!

  • Fazal Cheema says:

I have been familiar with John and his work for quite a while…to the valuable information in the article, i would like to add that before becoming a Perfumer, John was an avid perfumista like all of us and was quite active on fragrance forums such as Basenotes. for this draw, my choice will be the sample set. i am already a member of CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery Facebook community and reside in the great old USA.

  • Barbara B says:

I find John’s bio most fascinating and someday will watch every You Tube video he has available! Most fascinating to me is that Mr. Pegg is from Michigan, where I live!

I have an older sampler set and have tried every fragrance of his except for Black Vines. Would love to win a sample of Dirty Flower Factory. I am in the US and have liked the CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery Facebook page!

  • I love the scents in this line and John’s nod to Detroit’s auto-industry through his packaging! I just bought my first full bottle of Unknown Pleasures and would love to give Dirty Flower Factory a try! I am in the U.S.

  • I’ve liked this series on Facebook…and I’ve definitely genuinely liked each entry. It’s fascinating to see these different faces of American fragrance in personal detail. I’ve loved several of John’s earlier fragrances (particularly Pretty Machine and Santalum Slivers); as a Rust Belt girl from Ohio, I really dig his aesthetic and that we’re getting a Midwest point of view in his work. I’d love to win the Dirty Flower Factory sample, and I am in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

John Pegg is fascinating in that his goal is raw and unique but approachable. And he achieves it with no formal training. A true American perfumer. I would choose the sampler set.

  • I like that John Pegg wants to be unique and tries to figure things out himself. I very much can relate to that. As for the perfumes, I think they are quite unique, I love the roughness of his work and R’Oud Elements is my favorite. Although I must confess that I haven’t tried them all (yet).

I liked the series American Perfumers on facebook some time ago already.

Thanks John and ÇaFleureBon for this wonderful draw. I’mI the EU

  • I love that John Pegg is doing artisanal work in Detroit. I hope this once-grand American city makes a comeback.

I would love to try Dirty Flower Factory, thank you for the draw!

  • It is interesting to me that I share some similar musical tastes with John Pegg. It’s cool how one art form can influence another. I like the fact that he mentions Doc Martens in the description of Dirty Flower Factory, too, and that makes it all the more appealing. I would love to have a chance to try this one, the nostalgia factor is already intriguing me! I have liked CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery. I’m in the U.S. Thanks.
