Profile:I grew up between fields of farmland and the Cross Timbers of rural Oklahoma, and I still live on the same property where I grew up.  Raised within the forest, I was always drawn to the beauty and magic of Nature.  There are spirits in the woods, in each tree, and every plant, and I would find myself wandering on and off the trails behind our house.  My spirit grew with the seasons, and I became more and more connected to the Earth around me.  I found my spirituality tied to the world around me, and I wanted to express that through art.

My parents were artists, and I grew up travelling with them to their shows around the country.  Surrounded by artists of all kinds, I experimented with painting and drawing, sculpture, and photography early on.  I focused on writing and photography, but I was always looking for something new to try.  I visited my first Renaissance Festival when I was in junior high, and I kept looking for a way to become a part of it ever since.  I loved the blending of old and new, history and fantasy, and it seemed a perfect outlet for my creativity.

Scent as an art never occurred to me, and I first came to natural aromatics in a spiritual context.  Every drop of essential oil contained the living soul of Nature, and I blended for awareness, purification, and ritual.  I soon found that these scents didn't trigger headaches, sinus, or respiratory issues like my collection of store-bought perfumes and body products, and I expanded my use to include scents for personal use. I experimented with fragrances and remedies, always in awe of how powerful these tiny drops could be. My first blends, created during my teenage years, were… interesting at best.  But I kept researching, and I had success with oils therapeutically.  Easily distracted, my focus drifted back to writing and photography, but I kept using oils for remedies and ritual.  It wasn't until about five years ago that I began to re-visit fragrance, curious about the sense I had overlooked so long ago.

I was amazed by how powerful scent could be.  It ties us to our animal nature and reminds us that we are part of the Earth.  It can trigger a long-lost memory, and I've seen grown men moved to tears at the scent of tobacco that reminds them of their grandfather.  Fragrance envelopes us, transporting us out of the mundane world, uplifting our moods, and heightening our awareness.  It is a powerful force that is too often overlooked.  I delved into fragrance and instantly found myself addicted.  It was like seeing with new eyes, and I quickly started collecting oils and resins, mesmerized by the subtle qualities of each one.  I had a new appreciation for fragrance, and I approached scent-blending as the art form it truly is.  That was what changed everything.  I saw the notes as color and light, blending into both subtle shades and bold, new hues.  It evolved slowly, learning as I went, reading everything I could find from the modern chemistry to historical and spiritual uses of scent.

I've been enamored of history and fantasy since childhood, and I've always blended them into my work.  Being an independent perfumer, I feel like I can live out my own fantasies, finally able to use different art forms together.  I grew up dreaming of running away with the gypsies, creating potions, and telling fortunes.  While I may not have my own vardo (yet), I've found the next best thing at the Renaissance Faire.  My husband and I have always loved faire, and getting to be a part of it was a dream come true.  Now we spend over half the year dressed in garb, travelling and creating, growing and developing as Sylva Pagana. Since my beloved forest has been my greatest inspiration, with my first perfume I set out to create something that invoked the deepest, darkest parts   of the forest, the wild virility of Nature, and the untamed spirit in all of us.

The result was Satyr, and I was amazed at how the blended oils could transport me to another time and place.  I was no longer in my kitchen, but in a secret part of the woods even I'd never seen.  With just a whiff, I felt a long-lost sense coming back, and I felt more connected to Nature than ever before.  I went on to create new blends, interested in going from concept to creation as with sculpture or photography.  Natural perfumery has become my way of honoring what I find sacred, expressing concepts in a different way, and challenging the idea what art can be.

As a business, we started slowly, growing out of a personal passion for art and scent.  The name Sylva Pagana comes from the Latin for "woodland country-dweller", and it seems to suit us as we create in our little house in the woods.  I've been inspired my so many artists along the way that its too difficult to name any in particular.  The friends I've made at Renaissance Faires and art shows have inspired me the most.  They prove that inspiration and creativity can be combined with hard work and a little luck to fulfill a dream.  They've shown me that one's passion can leave the confines of the studio and seep into every part of your life.

On American Perfumery: I feel like there is no limit, no boundaries, and I can take my art and my business as far as I want.  There is a wild spirit to America, and I think natural perfumery captures that perfectly.

Delaney is from Oklahoma which was my first home in the US..looking at Delaney’s pictures does remind me of the people I met in Oklahoma. Oklahoma has its own culture, quite different from states like NY. Like me, Delaney is also history buff so another interesting similarity 🙂

Jim Henson is really a great choice. I also admire Jim Henson for the fact he has used his influence to promote social issues I also support. thanks a lot for the draw. I am in the US..

for this draw, my choice will be The Captain’s Blend..

I am already member of CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery on Facebook

I especially appreciate Delaney’s idea that scent “ties us to our animal nature.” I’m a registered USA reader, and I would choose Ancient Oak. Thanks!

  • It’s fascinating to me to spend half the year dressed in garb. I would love to get some of that Captain’s Blend. U.S.

  • Wow! This is a woman close to my heart. So much about her story resonates with me. Her connection with art and spirituality and nature is beautiful and powerful. I also worked in the Ren Faires. I think I knew her in a past life…

I would love to try the Ancient Oak if I am so lucky.

  • Mindy Wilson says:

Delaney is amazing, her ability to mix the most amazing fragrance and transport the wearer is incredible. She truly is and has a gift!

  • Samantha K says:

Delaney saved my husband’s beard and when she heard that I had an allergy to one of their staple Beard Oils, she made a special blend just for him (and me). Thank you so much!

  • Thank you Delaney and Sylva Pagana for bringing the magic and the potions into our lives! What Delaney might have left out is her sweetness and generosity of spirit! Hers is a revived kind of story telling, where you become the main character by simple application.

  • Thank you for the profile. Delaney is really living out her own personal dreams, and that is truly wonderful!! Thanks for the draw. If I was lucky enough to win, I’d pick Ancient Oak. Cheers!Oh, and of course, I’ve loved the Profile on FB for a long time now! 🙂

  • Reading from the top of the article down it was quite surprising to see Jim Henson as a favorite American artist (fascinating). 🙂 If I am chosen please let me have the Sunshine Cologne.

  • I enjoyed reading Delaneys philosophy. I really admire people who choose to exit the mainstream image of life. That Renaissance Faire looks amazing! I would love to try The Captain’s Blend..I am a registered reader in the US. Thank you very much for the draw too.

I love that fragrance can take one on a spiritual journey. Delaney is a conjurer of fragrance magic and her connection to the scents she creates is inspiring. Her fragrances seem to have a connection with the earth and the elemental forces of nature – also love that they’re natural perfumes.

I’m in the US and would love to win the Damsel perfume. I have already liked the CaFleurBon Facebook page. Thank you!

  • Delaney is a truly gifted perfumer, and as a Certified Natural Perfumer in the Guild, has accomplished a level of certification that is admirable. I am so delighted that Einsof has introduced her to your readers. They will truly love her vivid, beautiful perfumes. No need to enter me in the draw.

  • Artists have a special way of understanding that everything is connected. Delaney does such a poetic, beautiful job of linking her experiences and influences with her resulting role as a perfumer. I think artists understand that about each other, but we can’t always explain it so well. It will make great inspiration for me today. Your ancient oak fragrance sounds amazing. I hope to try it!

  • Delaney adds her energy with our Mother Earths energy and together they create magic in a bottle, how cool is that! I love that she stays true to herself and is living her dream and that a part of her is imparted in each scent she brings to life. If I win I would love to try Sunshine.

  • Janie Regier says:

I am amazed Delaney is from Oklahoma , vey near to me . And we share a deep love for Mother Earth. I would love to experience Ancient Oak.

  • I so happy for you and jealous that you live on the same land you grew up in, and so near the forest. Wish I had something like that.
And really like your choice to spend so much of your time as traveling artists.
    Wishing you all the best.
Would like to try either Captain’s Blend or Ancient Oak, both sound intriguing, and I can’t quite make up my mind which I prefer.

I have always admired people with a talent for blending scents, because scent is able to move our emotions and spirit like nothing else. Like Delaney I share a love of forest and all its smells and would love to try Ancient Oak. Or The Captain’s Blend, that also sounds amazing.

  • Delaney sounds like a creative and passionate soul. I liked reading about her spiritual connection to the Earth, and how scent “ties us to our animal nature and reminds us that we are part of the Earth.” Ren faires too!

I would love to try Ancient Oak

  • What an interesting life! Delaney sounds like a modern day gypsy…well, not exactly, since she lives on her land where she grew up. But all the travels sound like an interesting life! I would love to try Damsel. I am in the USA.

  • As a teenager (during the early D&D days) I was fascinated with Renaissance fairs — what a wonderful partnership it sounds like she and her husband have! I’d love to try Ancient Oak (I’m a sucker for woodsy/oak mossy scents). I am registered, live in the US and FB page liked!

  • I found it fascinating that Delaney sees the fragrance notes as color and light, blending into both subtle shades and bold, new hues. My choice of perfume would be The Captain’s Blend

  • Valentine Girl says:

I found it quite interesting how she dabbled with essential oil and blends as a teenager & then pursued other art forms, before finally returning full circle to fragrance & expressing her creativity with scent! I also feel a kindred connection with her thoughts on Nature, as I live in the same, magical world…there are spirits in the trees and plants. When I was about 9-10, my ballet teacher got us a gig at the local Ren Faire as peasant dancers. We got to dress in costume and dance & because I was also a musician, I would alternate between dancing ‘Gathering Peascods’ and trilling away on my flute à bec.

Medieval history still fascinates me to this day, though my particular interest is the Anglo-Saxons and their wortcunnings, the Danish Viking invasions (Danelaw) & the final ending with the Norman conquest. I would love to try Ancient Oak because I was lucky to grow up in an old house that had a 400 year old white oak growing on the property. It would take at least 5 of my arm spans to go around the base of the trunk and the limbs stretched out like mighty arms with leafy fingertips. It is an old and majestic oak tree & because it is on private property, few people know of its existence and my family’s guardianship over the tree. I have always believed that there is a spirit that lives in that ancient oak. Scent triggers memories, and just reading the description of the notes in Ancient Oak triggered mine with that tree…so know I just have to smell it. I hope I end up being lucky (praying to the spirit of the ancient oak on that score), but I thank you for the post and draw opportunity…USA resident (sorry I don’t have any FB or any other social media thing going on with me to like or tweet…I guess I am just a little too medieval for that kind of thing.LoL)

  • I can relate so much to Delaney, and her connection to nature, trees, and the hidden world within the forest. I, too, find my spirituality bolstered within the woods. For this reason, I am drawn to Ancient Oak and would love the chance to try it! 10 ml of Ancient Oak would be my choice. Thanks so much, I’m in the US.

  • Sounds like Delaney has never worked a day in her life! Sounds like she is living her dream. I really found it interesting that she dabbled in perfumery, went back to other forms of art, and then came back to perfumes.
    Loved reading the eview.
I would love to try Sunshine!
Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.
