Brooklyn Perfumer Casey Coyle of Forager Botanicals

Profile: I was born in Montana but grew up mostly in Northern California.  The outdoors and nature have always been important to me. I took for granted having access to beautiful hiking trails and lush vegetation right outside my Oakland hills home. I moved to New York in 2006 and now live in Brooklyn.

Although I love all of the culture, energy and creativity living in a big city offers, my husband, daughter and I spend many weekends out of the city, often times venturing to upstate New York, so that we can be closer to nature.

I kind of happened into perfumery. When I was pregnant with my daughter I changed my beauty routine to all natural products. But I couldn't find a natural perfume that suited me so I decided to create what I was looking which was lightly scented perfumes using all natural ingredients. I started taking classes from other perfumers and really loved the process of coming up with an idea for a perfume and then working through the refining steps until I achieved what I was looking for.

One of my first sparks of interest in perfumery was when I visited an old mansion in upstate New York that had a standing chimney on the back acres of the property. When I asked the property owner about the chimney he told me the house used to belong to woman in the 1900’s and she had a small perfumery in the back where she made her own perfumes. The building had later burned down and only the chimney remained. I thought that was so cool and really changed my preconceptions that perfumes had to be made by large companies in factories. I loved the idea of this woman making scented perfumes and herbal remedies from her own back yard and years later went on to form my company Forager Botanicals so that I could do the same thing.

On American Perfumery: Being part of the independent movement of natural product enthusiast and entrepreneurs in the United States is so inspiring.  There is so much creativity coming out small local brands these days.

Favorite American Artist: I attended art school and am a trained graphic designer and so I am a very visual person. I constantly inspired by all kinds of artists and designers. One designer I came across a couple of years ago that I found particularly inspiring was Mrs. Mary Delany. She was an American female artist in the 1700s, which was unusual who created beautiful collages out of hand drawn botanicals that she would cut out and glue onto black paper. I really love any art that is botanical and I love to go to museum exhibits for inspiration.

Casey Coyle draws and illustrates the packaging for Forager Perfumes

I draw and watercolor all of the illustrations on my packaging for Forager Botanicals. My mother in law Susan Lozoraitis, is also painter and does beautiful botanical paintings with bright rich colors, which I love and have several hanging in my home.

  • I liked her story about the old house with only the standing chimney, and how this woman from the past inspired her perfume creativity. She looks very young; she should have many creative years ahead! As usual, Cafleurebon has introduced me to a perfumer that I was unfamiliar with. The roller ball set looks very interesting and I am in the US. Thanks!
