ÇaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery: Beckie Sheloske of Rebel Intuitive + Go Wild or Go Home Draw

Beckie

Beckie Sheloske of Rebel Intuitive Perfumerie

Profile: Among the looming brick ghosts of the Industrial Revolution lies Auburn, Maine.  This gritty mill town is where I spent my childhood.  My parents went their separate ways when I was three years old.  My mother, an English teacher, remarried shortly and my little sister was born.  My father is a mechanic and used to race cars at a local speedway when I was a little girl.  He drove me through my childhood in a black Mustang convertible, and taught me about a life of fun and rock n’ roll from the 60s and 70s.

In 1997, I moved to Vermont to attend Goddard College.  Goddard was a progressive liberal arts school where there were no grades, no tests and studies were independent.  Full of anarchists, artists, geniuses, and eccentric freaks, I felt right at home.   I focused on herbalism, mind-body medicine, and fashion design. Halfway through college, I took a study leave, attending fashion school in Italy.  Returning from Italy, I graduated from Goddard in 2001 I decided to pursue a career in fashion.  I was offered a job working for a clothing line that employed grassroots values and focused on the use of printed European rayon.   While I was there I was the patternmaker and assisted production. From there I owned a shop offering custom clothing, I freelanced fashion design, and worked as a tailor for a men’s fashion retailer.

Fashion led me to scent, as perfume like fashion is a creation of a fantasy.  The nature of scent creates a magical, intimate experience and instantly lifts the wearer on a journey through their emotions.  The mystique surrounding perfumers intrigued me with their ability to produce such elixirs.  As my intrigue grew, there were aspects that felt inaccessible but that just fueled my fire to unlock the secrets for myself.

I sought out aromatics and began building a perfumer’s organ, smelling and writing my impressions.  I smelled the notes and began making connections.  I could sense the layers of synchronicity between them.  I read as many books I possibly could about perfume construction, history and the industry.  I discovered within the research a view that perfume consisting of only naturals would be boring and flat, without dimension.  I felt fervor to set out and prove otherwise so I began designing perfume using strictly naturals, creating my own formulas and establishing my own techniques.   I know now that beautiful, full bodied perfumes can be created using only naturals and that is the artistry that speaks through my line of perfume.

Katy&Beckie72

Beckie Sheloske and Katie Knuth

My business partner, Katy and I came together through the inspiration of fashion and similar creative pursuits.  Katy and I are creative soul mates and we have a relationship we both agree is unique.  Naturally, we joined forces as Rebel Intuitive, me as perfumer and Katy as creative director. Together we focus on portraying scent as explored through all the senses. We put an abundance of thought into the images, descriptions, and mood behind each perfume to bring that experience to the wearer.

What it means to be an American perfumer:  To me it’s all about freedom, really.  The freedom in the ability to use all natural ingredients and  to create modern perfumes that are based on tradition, but go beyond. Freedom with the option to make my own rules and challenge status quo as loudly or as quietly as I want.  Being an American perfumer is the position of a genuine artist.

Favorite American Artist:  Mae West. She was a vaudeville performer, playwright, Broadway star and sex symbol.  Although she was all of those things, she most importantly was a blunt, independent woman who became an icon simply by being her wild self. She is absolutely inspiring. She challenged opposition, refused to censor her artistic expression and was fearlessly sensual.  Those qualities can also be found in my perfumes.  “Those who are easily shocked should be shocked more often.” –Mae West

Note: We were so intrigued with Steve Johnson’s review we really wanted to learn about Beckie’s Path to perfumery.

  • Found it fascinating that Ms.Sheloske went to a college where there were no grades, no tests, and studies were independent.
Loved when she said scent “lifts the wearer on a journey through their emotions”. If I was the lucky winner I would choose the sampler set. I am in the US.

  • I’m thrilled to learn more about Rebel Intuitive and Beckie Sheloske! I am *so* familiar with the places she’s lived and studied. I was intrigued by the line already but Auburn, Maine and Goddard College just inform a person in certain ways. . .very cool! I’ve been wanting to the whole line (of course), but Winter Lewd sounds so fine! Thanks for the draw. Already love the Profiles on FB, of course. Thanks for the great profile, too! Cheers.

it is interesting she adores Mae West whose body inspired the bottle of one of my favorite classic creations, Shocking by Schiaparelli. best of luck on your perfume journey..i also share your passion for fashion and see a close link between fashion and perfume..my choice for this draw will be Ninon. I am in the US

  • I cannot imagine going to college with no grades given. I do think it would be somewhere you could either excel, or lag behind. I do like the idea of natural perfumes.
I’m in the US, my choice would be Ninon. Thanks!

  • How interesting to transition from fashion to natural perfumery! They all sound amazing, but I’d love to try Ninon. Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US (and I’ve liked the FB profiles).

Everyone who loves perfume needs to read Beckies comments. Well done. I had not heard of this artist so I am off to view her site.
I would love to try anything of this artist.

  • I hope her perfumes smell as wonderfully fearless and independent as the quote from Mae West. I would love to try Winter Lewd, and I am in the US.

  • Any new natural perfumer is fascinating- but Beckie is Goddard proven to be an artist on her own path. I love the idea of a creative director, as Katy, because sometimes creative powerhouses need some direction, and parings are always love stories of some kind.

i live in the us, and based on Steve’s review i would choose 15mL of Ninon.

  • It’s great with new perfumers tyring to push the boundaries with naturals – just like when it all started. Here’s wishing Sheloske all the luck with her new venture in perfurmery!

I’d love a to try Winter Lewd if I’m picked and I’m from Sweden. Thanks for the review and the draw.

  • I found very fascinating, that she really love her job. And that must be a very interesting collage with no grades given. And of course, I love natural perfumes. If I would have chance to win, my choice would be the Ninon perfume. I’ve liked the FB profiles.
    I live in Europe.

  • I liked reading about her path from fashion to scent- and I would choose the sample set. I’m in the US.

  • I loved the mention of Goddard , as I always wanted to attend . You don’t hear much about it . I would LOVE to own Grace at 67th . Labdanum in the base lures me every time !

  • Lillian Holloway says:

It is interesting to read what the path was that leads a person to find their calling. Beckie Sheloske had a very cool path indeed. I am torn between Ninon and Grace…I live in t he US.

  • I love that Beckie saw a challenge in creating full beautiful scents from natural sources and went for it! I think that taking on challenges and forging one’s own path is a theme in American Perfumery. Love to try Ninon!
I have liked on Facebook and am in the US. Thanks for the profile and the draw!

My favorite parts of this profile were reading about all of the influences–the grit of Industrial America, music of the 60s, 70s, 80s, fashion, natural materials, and Mae West–what a fabulous palette of sensations with which to create fragrances of style AND substance! Since all three sound incredible, I would choose the sample set. I like the FB page and am in the US. Thank you for this beautiful profile and generous draw!

  • I throughly enjoyed reading about Becky’s upbringing, many aspects of which I can relate to. Her energy leaps from the page too! This is a wonderful draw and her creations sound fantastic, embolishing the freedom she speaks of and leaping from the page like her! I am in the US. Lovely review thank you.

  • I enjoyed reading how one life circumstance and choice led to the next to where Becky is today. I would like to win the Winter Lewd. USA

  • I love the sound of Becky’s work and would adore to try them. Love the length and breadth of your inspirations Becky and I’m sure these are reflected in your work with essences. Mae West! I love it..she’s such an icon but did we really know her?
I am international. Thank you for the draw

  • I love that she adores Mae West. Ninon sounds right up my alley. I live in the U.S. Thanks for the draw!

  • I’m always intrigued by the myriad paths that perfumers take to their craft. I would love to win the sample set and am in the US.

  • I alwayls like to hear what a new American perfumer has to say about American perfumery. If I win the sample set would be fab. 🙂 US

  • I liked reading about Beckie’s inspirations – a bit of back story makes perfume that much more evocative. I’d love to try Ninon! I’m in the US; thanks for the draw!

  • not sure if this is too late…

I liked reading about Beckie’s strong sense of intrinsic motivation. Goddard sounds a lot like Hampshire College in MA. Personally I need structure from the outside and really struggle with organization and follow-through, so it always impresses me when someone has these things in spades to act as the tinder to their creative spark.

    Also, Mae West!
I’d choose Ninon which sounds so lovely.

    Thanks
