Joe Garces, the Creative Director  and CEO of Robert Piguet Parfums is the "James Brown" of the fragrance world. He is a man always in motion, on a plane, at a PA somewhere, in another time zone, at the perfume lab in Paris, and traveling the globe as the brand ambassador for the House of Robert Piguet.  Joe may dine with heads of state and royals, but never forgets he came from humble beginnings.  I caught up with him and a ten minute fact check  turned into a two hour coversation.

We talked about many things, including his working relationship with one of the world's greatest perfumers, Aurelien Guichard and how many recent Piguet fragrances reflect the diverse cultural preferences in perfumes in the numerous countries where the brand is sold. Joe told me that Piguet's OUD  perfume wasn't created to piggyback off the European/American trend for the popular note, but as an homage to the Arabic culture and people with whom he has spent much time with and to the high grade oud oil that has perfumed their homes and bodies for centuries.

Scent of place was the inspiration for Knightsbridge, the Robert Piguet perfume created  exclusively for Harrods, founded in 1834, the biggest department store in the U.K. and the most famous department store in the world. The idea was to create a perfume that capture Harrod's, in all its scented splendor at 2:00 AM.

Mark Behnke, Managing Editor wrote:

"Knightsbridge perfume is the most complete composition M. Guichard has done for a long time. I am generally a fan of his creations but Knightsbridge might be the best fragrance he has ever made. It will take a little more time and perspective to confirm that. The one thing I am sure of is Knightsbridge de Robert Piguet is my best new perfume of the first half of 2013."

haute parfumerie

Haute Parfumerie at Harrod's

"For this imaginary stroll I picture waking up on the Fifth Floor and as I walk towards the Haute Parfumerie the last lingering persistent note of a day of perfumistas sampling the wares is that of a rose. The rose has a bit of nutmeg to accentuate the spicy facets within the rose. As I realize I’m alone I begin to wander downstairs and as I pass through the beauty section I smell the iris in the powder. M. Guichard has something richer in mind and he captures the iris with a completely decadent orris butter that is so rooty and opulent you just don’t want it to end. Paired with a creamy sandalwood this is what luxury means as this feels like the finest silk sliding through my hand with a frisson on my fingertips. Before I get to the front of the store I stop and breathe deep at the Louis Vuitton display and the smell of the finest leather meets me. I try on a pair of gloves and bring it to my face inhaling deep. The choice of tonka to support the leather accord makes a perfect ending to my night alone in Harrod’s".

I have never been to London, which I mentioned to Joe. A large percentage of our readers have never been there either but would love to visit Harrod's and own a bottle of Knightsbridge de Robert Piguet Perfume.

So what does Joe say to me when I told him that? "O.K., Michelyn, offer a bottle to one of your readers; I am packing  a 100ml bottle in my luggage  right now".

  • I personally love Mademoisselle, beautiful sweet Orange Blossom on me and very wearable. I also tried the new Pacific Line and will say they are all beautiful and easy to wear. As far as their best seller, I am assuming its Fracas…..one I cannot wear, but I love the little sister Petit Fracas, she is a beauty also.

  • I personally like Visa..as I do love peach and Visa certainly satisfies my peachy cravings. Not syrupy, but a dark, plumy peach. Kinda like a purple peach but still juicy but smooth. Perhaps the leather makes it smooth, velvet-like. I like my peachy heavier, so Visa does the trick. A sophisticated peach..unlike I’d say, Tresor In Love which is a tart, breezy peach.

I’d definitely guess Fracas is the best seller.

Thanks for the draw! I live in the U.S.

  • I can’t read apparently…lol..not fracas?

I’d say Bandit or Visa..Visa maybe?

  • I like Visa but I wonder if it’s Baghari , which I love – I won a sample bottle at a Sniffapalooza event some 5 years ago, and was treated to a presentation by Mr. Garces. He has a great gift for public appearances. Knightsbridge sounds lovely,

  • Fracas is my favorite in this line. Its pretty much the ‘reference’ tuberose, no?

My guess for second best selling would be Bandit too.

Joe Garces is one of the coolest perfume doods. I always enjoyed seeing him at Sniffapalooza.

  • i can hardly believe what i am about to say — but my favorite piguet is fracas (not bandit. i would have *thought* i’d say bandit, but nope…)

fracas is so lush, so deep, so amazingly creamy and tuberose-y — *and* there is a dab of apricot to my nose as well.

in fact, i must go dig it out and wear it!

having read the other comments, i now must also try visa. peach and leather — be still my heart…

  • Victoria Casey says:

Fracas is my favorite. It is incredibly sexy, yet still manages to be ladylike.
My guess for second in popularity would be Bandit.

  • Stephenjohn says:

My mother wears Bandit, and Fracas. I’m certain she would love to try this. I would guess that Fracas is their best seller, whilst Bandit is No.2. Thanks for the draw!

  • I would say Fracas is my fav from the line. It is tuberose heaven and is the gold standard of all tuberose fragrances. I think w/o a doubt Fracas is the best seller. I live in the US.

  • I love Fracas!! It’s such a stunner. As far as the SECOND best selling, it’s probably far too easy for it to be Petit Fracas, so I’ll guess Mademoiselle. Baghari is probably #3 (does that get me a 3rd shot?). LOL 😉

  • Catherine B says:

Baghari is my most beloved Robert Piguet fragrance to date. I also like Casbah and Bois Noir, though they don’t make my heart sing the way Baghari does. That said, I haven’t sniffed Knightsbridge yet, and it sounds delightful. Rose, iris, nutmeg, leather and tonka? Oh, my goodness, sign me up!

I’ve missed the last several Sniffas due to grad school, so sadly have never met Joe Garces. But I’m now one week away from finishing my coursework, and am SO looking forward to diving back into the delights of scent. Thank you, Michelyn and Joe, for the olfactory inspiration!

  • As soon as I read Mark’s review of Knightsbridge, I immediately started scheming. After all, my brother is moving to London! My favorite Robert Piguet fragrance is Visa, which to me is incredibly romantic and alluring. I know Michelyn wore this as her wedding fragrance, and I can totally understand her choice. My guess for the second best selling fragrance is Bandit. Thanks for the incredible draw!

  • Charles Briggs says:

    OMG, what an opportunity.

I love the mature citrus of “Cravache”. This just envelopes me when my skin heats up and is an olfactory delight. So masculine and elegant to my nose. There seems to be a metallic touch to it. The nutmeg note really pops with my chemistry. Purely gr8!

I feel a toss up between Visa and Bandit being second best seller.

I feel it is probably Bandit for 2nd Best Seller just for the history behind it and the comments it consistently receives. Soooo, I choose “BANDIT”.

  • This sounds amazing with the rose, sandalwood, and leather. How generous of Joe Garces to do this. I only know what Fracas smells like and would love to smell the others, too. I would guess that Bandit is the second best seller. I live in the U.S.

  • #1 – Not only is Visa my favorite, it is my HG perfume. If I had to chose one, only one, it would be the reissued Visa. I’ve never tried the original, and frankly I don’t care – Visa hits all the right bells for me – fruity, balmy opulence with touch of naughty.

#2 – I’m guessing Bandit is the second best seller. Like many others, I appreciate Bandit & understand its appeal, but I can’t wear it.

Iris, rose, leather, benzion? Wow, Knightsbridge sounds right up my alley, and I’ve love to review in context of travels to London, my favorite city outside of the US.

    Thank you for the draw!

  • What a generous draw and a generous man Joe is, I’d say big hearted to go even further. Just that gesture here I’m sure has made a difference to the way people are experiencing this review. Iys the little things as they say…I like the Pacific Range and Blossom intriques me with the mandarin and white musk combination, caressing white petals I’d say uniting them all. And I’d imagine there’s more, nothing like letting a fragrance totally reveal itself on the wearer. Here’s hoping…

  • Thanks for the amazing draw.
My fav. Is mademoiselle piguet. It is just a very distinctive orange blossom fragrance I have ever smelled. Its sort of toasty sweet & musky and little tangy orange blossom that feels full of body. Really love it.
I believe second best seller is Bandit
Joe Garces is such a down to earth kind of guy.

  • Okay, I’m going to take a stab at the #2 best seller: Calypso. It’s got to be either Calypso or Visa, but since I prefer Calypso, I’m gonna stick with that as my guess. But then, it could be Bandit or Oud… Hmm. Fracas is obviously #1, and I’ll put Calypso as #2: final answer. As for my favorite? I have to admit, I didn’t realize there were so many Robert Piguet fragrances to choose from. This article made me dig a little deeper, and I read reviews of all of the fragrances in the line on various websites. The only one I own is Fracas, and its a bit too overpowering for me, so I’m dying to try Petite Fracas. I love the idea of moving the tuberose to the middle, and adding pear and cocoa to the top and bottom… it sounds lovely. I’m also intrigued by Douglas Hannant, which sounds dreamy, and I adore the incense-y Calypso.

Your article inspired me to read more about Joe Garces, and his revitalization of the House of Piguet. It really shows how committed he is, not only to resurrecting the brand, but to honoring the cultures of his customers. His story about creating their Oud really highlighted his sincerity in that regard. I love his passion, and how deeply he’s thrown himself into his mission of elevating the Robert Piguet brand beyond simply a “classic” fragrance house. He wants this iconic, classic brand to also be vital, relevant, and a force to be reckoned with! Of course I went over to their Facebook page and “liked” it. I think Joe Garces needs a fan page as well!

And, yes, I’m dying to try Knightsbridge, so please let my comment count as many times as possible! 🙂

    Thanks!

  • Monica H. says:

This is a great glimpse of the man behind the brand! Not sure if this is US only.. but in case it’s not, I would guess that the #2 selling fragrance is…. Baghari

  • My favorite is Visa and I would wager that it’s the second best seller after Fracas. I love Fracas too but Visa’s more my everyday style. Thanks!

  • marcopietro says:

Knightsbridge sounds really lovely, I’d like very much to try it.
My favorite Piguet is Cravache, no doubt, I love it!
It’s perfect in every season and every context. It’s masculine (not macho), wereable, very balanced and self confident. A must!

  • My favorite Robert Piguet fragrance is Calypso, because it’s inoffensive and very easy to wear. My guess for the 2nd best selling is Bandit.

    Knightsbridge sounds lovely.

  • I’ve not tried the entire line, but my favourite so far is Bandit. I’m going through a phase of testing chypres and Bandit is a good one, with a fine leather and bitter dry green.
I’d guess the no2 best selling Piguet would be Mademoiselle Piguet.
Very nice of Joe Garces to make such an exclusive available,
    Thanks

  • I pretty much love all RP fragrances. Fracas is a tuberose bomb that I absolutely adore but Baghari and Visa are really loved ones as well. I live in London and last time I was in Harrod’s I was meaning to go to their stand and try Knightsbridge but I lost track of time and forgot all about it – sniffing around Harrods is one of my favourite things in the world! I think Bandit is their second biggest selling perfume but then again I find it hard to choose. I really loved Bois Bleu as well.

  • My favourite is Bandit. It is a great document from the past- which reveals the complexity of being a woman in the 1940s- and makes her seem daring, brave and utterly modern- the Katherine Hepburn of scent. I would also guess that Bandit is the second best-selling perfume of the Robert Piguet line. Thank you for the draw- both Ca Fleure Bon and Joe Garces; Knightsbridge sounds both wonderful and apposite.

  • My favourite R.Piguet perfume is Fracas. As a tubereuse lover , this is a must. It’s a classic scent, I know, but still wearable now and always. Good things never die. I prefer this Fracas to other tubereuse due to its complexity, sometimes sweet, sometimes animalic, sometimes fruity…Not boring at all and the longevity is awesome.
I only know a few R.Piguet parfumes, I would like to discover all of them!
I can imagine that FRACAS is the best selling fragance , followed by Bandit.

  • FearsMice says:

Baghari is my favorite — it’s effervescent and feels as celebratory as Champagne on New Year’s Eve… I’m guessing that Bandit is the overall No. 2 seller among the Piguet perfumes. Thanks for the wonderful draw.

  • This is a fantastically generous draw! When I first read the fragrance review here, I had to put it out of my mind as a trip to London was most certainly not in the books. Much as I would love to have a “night at the museum”-type evening at Harrods, it was not meant to be.

I love tuberose, but I have to say my favorite is Bandit, both for the scent, experience and the subversiveness for its time, no? Gorgeous!

I’m totally guessing, but I’ll go with Fracas as the most popular in the line, with Bandit in 2nd.

  • My favorite (at the moment) is Baghari. I own a few vintage Piguet bottles too and love them. I will guess that the #2 seller is Bandit. And thanks to Joe for a great draw!

  • Piguet has many lovely fragrances. My fav is Baghari. I have a vintage extraIt that I adore. It is so good I can’t wear it. Once in a while I just take it out and leave few drops to warm up on my skin and enjoy them like i would enjoy a piece of art that I admire.

Number 2 seller should be Visa.

Knightsbridge sounds fantastic. I agree, Joe Garces needs a fan page. He brought life to house of Piguet. Thank you for your generosity.

  • leathermountain says:

Me in Bandit: fearless, emotional, visionary.

My lover in Bandit: actual leather seems unnecessary.

We spilled a Bandit sample and lay down in the remains, wondering how a hardwood floor could inhale and exhale.

Until morning, when we ran out to buy a bottle.

I have no clue what other people like. My second choice? Tough call, but right now I’d say Casbah.

  • The one I like to smell on the others the most is Bandit for it’s “animalic” qualities.

I believe the #2 seller to be Visa.

  • My favorite is Fracas by a mile. I live in the hot humid south which is the perfect stage for this big brash beauty. I would say the #2 best seller is Bandit.

  • I prefer the Classic Piguets! All are wonderful but I especially love Baghari, followed by Visa.

For the second-best-selling…. I’ll guess Bandit. No idea if that is correct!

  • Fracas is a beauty, but I’m a Bandit girl — and I’d also guess that Bandit is the Number Two best-seller in the line. That said, I’d love to know more about Robert Piguet scents, and Joe does, indeed sound like a wonderful fellah. And he looks so jovial — like someone you’d want to sit down and have a drink with. When I was last in London I had only about two hours in Harrods, which is not nearly enough time for the fragrance department. Knightsbridge is one to look forward to smelling very soon.

  • Knightsbridge sounds wonderful. You had me at nutmeg spiced rose, orris butter, creamy sandalwood and leather. Ooh la la. Very generous of Joe Garces and adds to just how lovely he is. I really enjoyed reading all of the endearing and respectful comments about him. My favorite RP is Bandit for is leathery goodness and I would guess Bandit is the second best seller. I live in the U.S and I liked RP on Facebook. Thank you for the fab draw!

  • GregorySop says:

I have not had any experience with their fragrances as of yet. I have read over the reviews of them and several pique my interest. The Nouvelle collection of Oud, Casbah or Bois Noir sound great. I also believe the Nightsbridge sounds excellent. As far as the 2nd best seller, my guess would be Baghari 2006.

  • d3m0lici0n says:

My favorite is Bandit. And I’d say that the second best selling is also Bandit.
    Thanks.

  • Alas, I have not found my Piguet. Maybe this will be the One!

I am going to give Fracas another go soon, though. Maybe I’ll like it this time.

    Thank you Joe!!!

    I think #2 is Bandit.

  • Mark had me at ‘decadent orris butter’ but wheb he continues-” that is so rooty and opulent you just don’t want it to end. Paired with a creamy sandalwood this is what luxury means as this feels like the finest silk sliding through my hand with a frisson on my fingertips” Wowsa, I have to try this.
I haven’t been able to try any of the new frags neither from the nouvelle nor the pacific line, but from the classic line I really like Baghari, my guess for #2 would be Bandit.
Thanks for the draw- timetravelling London, to both CFB and Joe Garces

  • I can’t wear most tuberose, but I can appreciate Fracas on other people. I’d guess Visa is the #2 best seller for the line. Thanks for the drawing! Knightsbridge has been at the top of my must-sample list since that glowing review a few weeks ago.

  • Fazal Cheema says:

my favorite is Fracas and i believe the second best selling Piguet right now is Petit Fracas… i can personally attest the fact that Joe is extremely humble and down-to-earth individual and now you have made me curious about Joe’s background and life..any place where I can read more about his life before Piguet?

  • I have to admit, I have never tried anything from
this line, but I loved Mark’s review of Knightsbridge!
I have been fortunate enough to have shopped in Harrod’s.
I will never forget how in awe I felt, just to be
surrounded in pure luxury and decadence…
Thanks to Joe for this very generous draw!

  • matildaben says:

My favorite is Baghari – a great aldehydic floral in the vein of Chanel No. 22 – but Visa is a close runner-up

  • I’v tried Bandit about 5 times. The first four times it was like being punched in the nose: people smell this on purpose, seriously? The 5th times was a few weeks ago when I suddenly felt like I had found the green-leather I had long been looking for! It seems now to be my favourite but I am waiting to see whether it is lasting love or infatuation.

My guess is that Bandit is the second best seller, a little behind the Grande Madame – Fracas.

  • Igor Kipnis says:

I love that description of the scent. Personally I have never tried any of the creations from this house yet but its on my to-do list this year. After reading more about Robert Piguet at wikipedia, there’s definitely a silver lining to his life and I can see it applied to one self as well: never give up on your dreams

My guess for #2 selling fragrance would have to be Fracas

  • ElizabethN says:

Tell, I love Bandit, and I haven’t tried any others. Is Bandit the second best seller?

  • I love bandit for the sheer fact it is one of a kind and before it’s time. I would guess bandit as the 2nd best seller behind fracas.

  • I’ve never tried any of them sadly. Though now I really want to, starting with Knightsbridge! It has a kick ass name and a lot of amazing notes in it.

I am guessing from the sheer number of Bandit lovers here that that is the second best seller after Fracas (the one scent from him I’ve heard of before). Which is now on my list of things to try as well!

  • First of all, thanks needs to be given to Joe Garces for having opened this draw up for worldwide entries. My Australian self is very grateful.

My favourite Robert Pigeut fragrance is a toss-up between Bandit and Baghari 2006. Bandit is a fantastic, smouldering leather scent, whereas Baghari is a dry aldehydic fragrance, slightly smoky and very alluring.

I would predict that Bandit is Robert Pigeut’s second best-seller.

    Thanks for the draw!

  • Joe Garces sound like such a great guy . This is so generous
I always wanted to go to Harrods and this win be a dream come true to smell what it may be like with Knightsbridge
My favorite Robert Piguet perfume is Visa which is a glorious womanly perfume and gets compliments
Since I think Fracas is number one
I will say Visa is number 2
Thank you and to Mr Garces

  • My absolute favorite would be Fracas…the original (vintage)….my guess for number two would be Bandit? I have been to London twice in my lifetime and would LOVE to try Knightsbridge! Thank you for the draw and a shout out to Mr. Garces!

  • How generous! My favorite Robert Piguet fragrance is Bandit. I remember how I felt when I tried it first; it is a scent that takes the one who wears it to a special place. I would guess that Fracas would be the number 1 selling classic Robert Piguet, while Bandit would take 2nd place! Thanks to Joe Garces, and Cafleurebon.

  • A year ago I tried Cravache and I liked it. I think it is a sort of “classic men style” and a perfume like Cravache is always welcome in my perfume collection.
On the other hand, 69 years old Bandit and 65 years old Fracas could be Robert Piguet’s bestsellers.
Mark’s words and further reading about Knightsbridge tells me it must be my favorite from this house. It is full of ingredients I love a lot.
I’m also very interested about Oud, a fact that it is homage to Arabic culture can only be a great recommendation to me.
A few months ago I pressed like button at Robert Piguet Parfums on FB.

  • Mary Carol says:

I really enjoy Calypso, with its rose, peach and patchouli. I reach for it often in the the warmer months. It is very kind and generous of Joe Garces to offer the exclusive Knightsbridge in a drawing. I am sure this is an amazing perfume! My guess for the second best selling Robert Piguet fragrance would be bandit.

  • I do enjoy Mr Piguet parfums, first I was after beautiful and simple bottle design.
For my favourite scent I'd choose Oud. Church incense – is still my long lasting love and this Oud is one of few I know and enjoy. Very interesting bitter woods opening. I really like that strong smoky note that quickly takes center stage. I do enjoy a component of Patchouli which is nice.
Lasting power on me is 6-7 hours which I also like in this.

As for 2nd part, I'd go for Fracas, as #2 best selling, and if that will be wrong then maybe Oud.

    with Regards,

    Marcin

  • I love Baghari. The opening is happiness in a bottle and then it becomes an elegant floral that I much prefer to Chanel No 5.  My guess for second best selling perfume would be Visa.

  • I have had the pleasure of trying out Robert Piguet's Oud, and as an oud fantatic, it did not disappoint. Saffron and oud is a winning combination, which I have smelled before, but it is the myrrh and balsam fir that make this scent unique, adding a balminess, yet also a true woodsy, foresty feeling you don't get with other oud frangrances that have wood in them. As for the second best selling frangrance of the line, my guess is Bandit.

  • I've tried Bandit and Fracas. Initially Fracas made me recoil but it settled on me nicely, and lasted for hours. Bandit is more my speed, strong and mysterious.

I think Bandit must be the best-selling Piguet — at least it was the one I'd heard of most often before trying the line. Seems to have a real cult following, anyway.

    Thanks for the draw!

  • I would love to try this. While I l,ike and admire many of the Piguet fragrances, m,y favourite is still bandit parfum — when I am in the mood. It is certainly not for everyday wear!

  • Thank you for this draw. Ive only had the opportunity to try Fracas and Calypso. Loved them both and am planning to purchase Calypso. I would guess Bandit is the #2 best selling fragrance, simply because I see so many commenters going with that answer.

  • Catherine B says:

Thought I'd posted before, but may have been mis-directed… Baghari is my favoirte Piguet to date. I also like Bois Noir and Casbah, but the don't make my heart sing the way Baghari does. That said, Knightsbridge sounds GLORIOUS! Sign me up wherever it's available.
