ÇaFleureBon Creative Directors in Perfumery: Jan Ewoud Vos of Puredistance + The DNA of Pure Vision Draw

01-Jan-Ewoud-Vos-Thinking

Jan Ewoud  Vos Creative Director Puredistance "The Thinker"

For months – or years? – Michelyn Camen has asked me to write an article about the way I creatively direct Puredistance. Since I rather create and make things than talk about them, it took me a while before I felt starting writing. But today is a good day since spring is in the air and, so I will go through my archives and try to give you an insight in the way I try to keep the name Puredistance synonymous with understated elegance and timeless beauty. I will explain you how we team up with the Perfumers that have created our fragrances. I will also share with you some original visuals I have used in the past 8 years to inspire the Perfumers. Thinking long-term is fundamental to the consistent styling and quality of our Perfume House.

MY DRIVE -My main drive always has been to create beauty that lightens up the life of people. Beauty with a strong inner core of true passion, beauty and soul. I love to intrinsically ‘load up’ our creations with so much intense and genuine care for the aspect of beauty that the receiver can feel this. As real enthusiasm is infectious, the spirit that goes into a creation can be too. When I look at a van Gogh I can feel the passion, frenziness and (crazy) drive that went into it and it touches me. Still.

MY VISION- I keep this drive under control by long-term thinking. Puredistance always has had a clear vision and strategy. Back in 2002, when I came up with the name Puredistance I could see its global essence and this vision never changed and has solidly guided me all these years. Key in this vision are timeless beauty. Elegance. Small is Beautiful. Quality over Quantity. Pure Whites, rich, warm Golden tones, a touch of cool Silver and occasionally deep Reds…. Honesty hand in had with Loyalty as in the Pure of Purity. Distance for protection. To keep the inner values Pure.

MY WORK– With a background in design and photography, I do all design and artwork myself. I love to create: All packaging ,Photos and film, Brochures, books, our website and the concept for every new perfume

Puredistance DNA

Underlying all artwork is the Puredistance DNA. Whatever is new has to line up with our key values. With such a clear DNA and all artwork coming from one and the same person, I guess it is no surprise that Puredistance has developed into a Perfume House with its own, unique style.

06-Puredistance-Visual-M-01

One of the visuals given to Roja Dove for Puredistance M illustrating the androgynous and strong character of the fragrance – showing Marlene Dietrich, David Bowie, Annie Lenox and a model for Yves Saint Laurent. One piece of feedback I wrote to Roja Dove, August 12, 2010, after having received some try-outs for M. “If you think there should be a sting or something unexpected, please think of the high note of a saxophone or trumpet, rather than the cling of a sword.” Later I found I was referring to a high concentration of clove that I found was too dominantly present. Based on this feedback the Perfume was made more harmonious and balanced.

By the way: I never discuss ingredients, since I don’t know anything about them and want to keep it that way. I am not a Perfumer and don’t want to become one. I don’t want to be the guy that tells Paul McCartney to compose a song using lot of A notes and two times a C Major…. By keeping my olfactorial virginity I can much better judge the match between the fragrance and my concept, not being clouded by formula’s and ingredients.

07-Inspiration-Puredistance-M

Vintage Aston Martin and  brown leather interior

Evaluating the Perfume suggestions I got from Roja Dove I always closed my eyes and pictured myself sitting in the brown leather backseat of a vintage Aston Martin DB6. A leather and wood interior like the Oak Bar in New York: warm, rich and leathery, a seat and a place with a history. I combined this vision with the cool modern grey tones of the outside of the DB6 and this way I could evaluate effortlessly and in the end direct the Perfume into the right, balanced, ‘James Bond’ direction. Rich, comfortable, but with a hint of Danger.

08-Inspiration-Puredistance-Black

A visual and textual briefing for Antoine Lie for Puredistance BLACK. I found it important to communicate the elegantly dark quality of BLACK. Dark as in the shadows; elegance in the background.

09-Puredistance-WHITE-Inspiration-Vargas

Peruvian Artist Alberto Vargas known for his Pin-Up Girls

For Puredistance WHITE I colour changed a beautiful pin-up illustration from the genial Albert Vargas. This illustration perfectly embodied the fragrance I had in mind for WHITE.

10-Puredistance-WHITE-Inspiration

Another visual I created for WHITE, using one of my own images from my private collection. It clearly shows I am envisioning a warm, golden quality in WHITE, but in a ‘clean’ and original way. Not a sweaty, tropical gold, but a pure, radiant gold that warms in an open and pleasant way.

11-Suggestion-for-reworking-OPARDU

One piece of feedback I wrote to Annie Buzantian, May 10, 2012, after having received some reworks on  a fragrance we were working on. “And if you ask me in what direction I see any changes, I only have a small wish. To make the first vibrant hypnotic stage last a bit longer. (I really like the opening!) So that the picture I see the first 5 minutes stays sharp for a longer time instead of getting blurred pretty soon into the 'softer soapy stage.”

It stayed on the desk of Master Perfume Annie Buzantian for six months and in the end resulted in Puredistance OPARDU.

13-Puredistance-Classic-Collection

Presenting the Puredistance Master Perfume Collection in a way that does justice to its beauty and class has been one the biggest challenges. It took me one year to turn the idea of a Puredistance Chessboard Display into a reality.

14-Puredistance-Chess-Display-Drawings

The artistic process nearly always starts in my house where I work in a small room of 6 square metres. One Mac computer (All my life I have worked with Apple computers, where would I have been without them…?), lots of paper, some beautiful pens (I love pens!), a pair of scissors and a printer/copier are all I need. After designing the Chessboard Display I buy the materials to create a raw model. I love the physical process of creation, working with my hands, cutting, sawing, spraying. It perfectly balances the ‘nerdy’ act of design behind the computer that eventually kills my body! When the raw model has been perfected I try to find the right manufacturer.

Since we are such a small Perfume House that only sells to ca. 80 stores worldwide, we need suppliers that can produce small quantities. This is another task of my role as Creative Director, to find the right companies that can produce high quality Perfume, displays or packaging in small quantities. Not easy in a world that seems to be obsessed by the word MORE. But we manage!

15-Puredistance-Main-Office

Our Main Office in the Netherlands is an old church, converted to a production hall and design centre. In the morning I work at home in my 6m2 room, in the afternoon I go to the office where I have more space and people around me to test and evaluate my ideas. This place has a unique feel, since it was used for 60 years as a church and for 20 years as a ballet school…. spiritual elegance is still in the air!

16-Founder-Jan-Ewoud-Vos

Jan Ewoud Vos

Staying in the shadow, far away from the the intrigues and gossips the beauty and fashion world is famous for, it is easier for me to maintain a fresh and original view and stay ‘pure’. I feel blessed I never had to rub shoulders with the rich and famous and pretentious to achieve my goal: building one of the most beautiful ‘boutique’ Perfume Houses in the world. If my voyage has proved one thing to me, it’s the fact that if you stay loyal to your original vision for a long time, practice patience, and don’t compromise on your ethics, the impossible might become possible. And yes, you need some luck too!

17-Puredistance-Store-Design

Puredistance store design

Being Creative Director at Puredistance I am responsible for all elements of the Puredistance Presentation: packaging, displays and in this case the furniture. One era of style and design that has influenced me a lot is the Art Deco era.

18-Puredistance-Team

The PuredistanceTeam: (Top Left) Marije Tempel, Mary Gooding, Iris Vos, Bottom Left) Kalina Kordynska, Jan Ewoud Vos and Nele Tammiste

During the whole article I have written in the “I’ form. But let me make clear that nearly all my ideas are discussed and presented to the Puredistance team. Their feedback and ideas are of great importance and always result in a final design that is better. Also all Perfumes we get from the Perfumer are tried out by my team and while I have the final say, their input is an essential part of the process.

Basic RGB

Jan's inspirations are an eclectic group of artists or personalities and include Rene Gruau, Frank Sinatra, David Bowie, Coco Chanel, Roger Federer, James Bond, his family, The Rolling Stones, Andree Putnam and Emma Peel  (among others)

I feel one should never take too much credit for one’s achievements. Rather than constantly taking credit for the result, simply ENJOY the result. It is my view that without the right genes of our ancestors, without the right inspiration, we would never be what we are. Therefore I daily thank my parents for all they gave me and feel privileged and lucky to be born in a free country, the Netherlands, where I was able to get a good education and a safe life. All my creative work I see as the result of good genes, the right inspiration and a lot of luck. Below some of my main inspiration.

20-Puredistance-Perfume-Collection

The Puredistance Perfume Collection shown in 17.5 ml  ( from 25 percent to WHITE's 38 percent pure perfume oil)

I like to end my story with six visuals I created very recently. These images show the unique character of each fragrance, while at the same time there is the consistency of the underlying  Puredistance DNA – elegance, harmony and timeless beauty – that connects all of them.

Jan Ewoud Vos, Founder and Creative Director for Puredistance

  • I love the list of artistic inspirations: Batman, Scottish malt whisky, Roger Federer, Buddhism! It’s nice to see such an eclectic recipe of influences. If I won, my choice would be Opardu. I think Westerns like Shane, High Noon, Unforgiven, The Dark Valley, etc. would be a good inspiration for the next Puredistance fragrance — everyone roots for a mysterious, righteous stranger. Thanks for the drawing!

  • Wonderful review an fabulous draw. I found everything fascinating about Jan Ewoud Vos as a creative director, I think he is a really gentleman, who is love his job. And he is man of great learning. If I will lucky, my choice is White. I think “Mythology” would be a great name for the next Puredistance perfume.
    I live in Europe.

  • We hear so much of the ugliness in the world that we tend to forget all the beauty that it holds. Jan Ewoud Vos sees the beauty and creates more of it. Leonardo da Vinci probably had one of the most creative minds known. What fragrance would he inspire? I would be interested in the sampler. In the US.

  • I love the understated nature of this line, and the fact that Jan Ewoud Vos works from a concept rather than a list of notes. I have the sample set and think M is a masterpices, I love it. My choice if I won would be the new White.
Perhaps the next theme could be the vastness of Space?
    I am in Australia.

  • Yeah, for a captivating article. I am such a visual person and it was so wonderful reading how you design and the inspiration for your fragrances. I recently realized I will spray on cologne not by the smell but an inspiration for the day or a color of shirt I may be wearing. I love to close my eyes, take in the fragrance and analyze in my own unique way. When I smell Puredistance and try on the skin it amazes me the different varieties of notes I experience. Some days it’s one way and some days it may be another. Warm, cold, active, lazy, it seems all play an important part in Puredistance fragrances. I love the one of a kind art to portray your creativity. It would be such an honor to meet the whole team someday and tour the converted church. I can dream.

I would love to see a fragrance created around a deep dark blue. Dark blue can be compassionate but has trouble showing it as its emotions run deep, repressing it’s feelings. Dark blue is a serious masculine color representing knowledge, power, and integrity. Dark Blue could be a great inspiration and one to truely have fun with some unique notes.

I about peed myself at the end of this article as I was just reading and had no idea the generosity of this draw. Wow. I am certain I would choose the Purdistance M 16.5 ml and be happy forever. In the USA and thanks for letting us into your creative world.

  • Jan Ewoud Vos is so involved in every facet of his business, I found it interesting that he doesn’t give more direction to the creation of the scents. Input yes, but absolute direction, no. I really did enjoy reading his words though – fascinating read.
I would suggest an earthy perfume, dark, green, a deep grassy scent.
I’m in the US, and though the White sounds amazing to me, I would have to choose the sampler so I could experience all of the scents.
Thanks for this very generous draw!

  • This was an interview worth waiting for. I found Jan Ewoud Vos’ focus and clear vision of his brand very insightful. I loved his inspiration boards. In particular I thought the two athletes he picked: Federer and Bjorg, two of the coolest cucumbers out there, said a lot about his character and what he admires. I also loved the random addition of Asian food. His comments were spot on. I have not tried any of these but I think I would love 1. The word Carnelian popped in my head. This rusty orange is very different from the rest of the line. Would he interpret this with resins or rooty earth notes? Or something I can’t even imagine? I would be interested to find out. Thatnk you for the interesting interview and the draw! I am in the US.

  • Elizabeth T. says:

I love the visual of Jan Ewoud Vos’s Influences and Inspiration. I too am inspired by visuals, but need to put it down in words also! I love the A33 visual as well. This is completely random and I’m not affiliated in any way, but I think any of the floral paintings by BlueShedStudio would be fabulous inspiration for a perfume. They are elegant, sensual, and larger than life.

I would choose Antonia if I happen to win. Thank you for the lovely draw!

  • Fazal Cheema says:

there is no doubt this is the most informative article Jan Ewoud Vos has written about the brand and himself. I really admire the fact Jan knows he is creative guidance and not the perfumer so he gives perfumers absolute freedom. Instead of focusing on materials, Jan provides them with guidance and then hope they will translate into olfactory form. the pictures in the article that were used to guide the creation of different perfumes really made the article so much more fun to read and easier to understand Jan’s creative process. thanks so much for the wonderful creations. My choice for this draw will be Puredistance M. i am in the US

  • I love that he knows where to draw the line when it comes to creating a perfume. He leaves the technical aspects to the perfumer and focuses on the artistic direction. I have always admired people who know their own strengths and weaknesses.

I think Lady Godiva would be an interesting inspiration for a perfume. A beautiful, naked lady on a horse – I would like to smell a perfume that evokes that image.

Thanks for the draw. I’m in Canada

  • MikasMinion says:

That was a completely original interview for sure. I think that Jan Ewoud Vos explained the role of the creative director better than anyone else has, at least for me. I had always wondered how a creative director could inspire and conduct perfumers without interfering. I mean, what is the point of hiring an artist if you are just going to touch up their work? The music analogy helped me to understand. It made me think of my first college art assignment and how I just knew that the medium wasn’t for me and I couldn’t create in it but I could see instantly whose work was successful and why and had an idea of how each classmate could evolve.
I would love to be entered for the draw. I’m in the U.S. and would prefer the sample set.

  • I think he’s a great creative director. “Staying in the shadow, far away from the the intrigues and gossips the beauty and fashion world is famous for, it is easier for me to maintain a fresh and original view and stay ‘pure’. ” – this is a very good position and everything points to the fact that it’s true. Thats why I love almost all of Puredistance perfumes. Opulent scents, simple and beautiful design.
I would like to win 17.5 ml Puredistance M.
I think theme of simmetry in architecture or in the world on the whole would be a great artistic inspiration for the next Puredistance perfume.
I live in Russia. Thanks for the opportunity.

  • Marcopietro says:

Grat rewiew! I was impressed by the care taken by Jan Vos Ewould in every aspect of the creative process and in the various implementation phases. Every aspect of its strategy, vision and work expresses his idea of elegance and the result is up to expectations.
All fragrances created by Puredistance are sumptuous but never excessive, they are tres chic, comfortable and simply perfect.
I would like to win 17.5 ml Puredistance M.
    I live in Italy.
    Thanks for the draw!

  • I was fascinated by how visually oriented Mr. Vos seems to be, and especially to see the visual inspiration he gave the perfumer for Puredistance M. I’m in the US, and I would choose M if I were to win.

Constellations might inspire the next Puredistance perfume. What could be more pure and distant than the stars?

  • I love your inspiration board! I pored over it for a while. The sources of inspiration really speak to and interest me, though they would not be my own. I would love to see Puredistance create a perfume inspired by a trip to the past and the beautiful, luscious masterpiece perfumes that are now considered classics.
I would love to win Opardu.

  • d3m0lici0n says:

What a great article and what an interesting guy, that would be an awesome place to work, in that old church. Most important is that he states that you have to stay loyal to your goals, and be patient. And that he says that he is not a perfumer and he just want to be a better judge for every one of his projects. And the stories behind each fragrance are fascinating, I like the one from M where he is thinking about being sitting in an old Astor Martin. Great article and amazing draw!
I live in the US and my pick is White.
    Thanks

  • This was a refreshing read because Mr. Vos did not speak of ingredients or notes. I’m left with a completely different impression of the perfumes I haven’t smelled so far, than I otherwise would have. For another name, keeping with the letters of the alphabet, how about “Q”? My pick for the draw is the 17.5 ml Antonia. 🙂 US

  • A very educational read! As a creative director in a different field I can appreciate his leadership philosophy of finding inspiration and using it to guide and empower others to exercise their creativity. It’s no wonder Puredistance has done so well executing their vision. I am in the US and would love to have the 17.5 mL M. I’d love to see them further explore the Bowie and Rolling Stones inspiration, specifically where they cross over in Bowie and Jagger’s Dancing in the Streets cover. Perfect for celebrating the revelry of spring!

  • I found Jan Ewoud Vos’ description of being a creative director really interesting and informative. I especially appreciate his relating how he worked with Roja Dove on M. This was a great line, “I don’t want to be the guy that tells Paul McCartney to compose a song using lot of A notes and two times a C Major.” Bravo for allowing artists to do their own job! And a fine job, too, from what I’ve sampled of this line! How about a scent called Chess? I have chess smell memories, coming from a family with some serious chess players. . too bad I’m not a perfumer, lol!. If I had the luck of winning this drawer, I’d choose Black, as I’ve sampled it and find it wonderful. Cheers! In the US (still).

  • silvrolive says:

Thank you For sharing the images that inspire your collection Jan! Those are a highlight for me. How about a green scent- V (for Verde)? I would love to have the 17.5ml of White. Thanks for the draw! I am I the US.

  • I read the article a few times to take it all in. I particularly like the “My Influences & Inspirtations box. My suggestion would be a smokey vanilla done the Puredistance way. My favorite is M. But I would love to have the sample set if chosen. USA

  • What a fascinating interview. I enjoyed it thoroughly, but especially I feel that the mood boards say so much about Mr Vos; from Batman to Feldenkreis and from Björn Borg to Hermann Hesse, very special. I also love that the 1920s and the art deco movement is such an inspiration.
I think my feeling is that the poetry of the 7th century Chinese poet Tu Fu would be very in line with the elegance and serenity of the brand, and could be a great inspiration for a fragrance. Knowing how extremely difficult it can be coming up with the right name for a perfume(which hasn’r already been used)- I hesitantly say that such a perfume could be called ‘lü-shih’ for the special kind of verse used my Tu Fu.
I thank CFB and the Puredistance Team for the wonderful Draw, and would choose Opardu should I be so lucky. I’m in the EU, Denmark.

  • This article really explains what a Creative Director is and should be. Involved in every detail but allowing the perfumers, especially these master perfumers to realize the vision. This struck me…”I keep this drive under control by long-term thinking. Puredistance always has had a clear vision and strategy”. I think there are too many perfume companies that are in it for the short term and we won’t even remember them in a year. My suggestion is Emma, since I love Diana Riggs and Emma Peel. something with styrax for sure. The visuals made this a feast for the eyes and for my nose I choose the sampler. i have only tried Black and did like it. I nevr knew Roja Dove was the nose for M. Now it makes sense…

  • I enjoyed Jan Ewoud Vos’ evocative description of his company’s name, reflecting its purity and its distance from the hubbub and hierarchies of the fashion scene. This is a man of vision and integrity, I think.

I was delighted by his selection of David Bowie as one figure of inspiration. For the next creation, perhaps Iman Abdulmajid and Grace Jones could serve as muses!

If my name were chosen in the draw, I would choose a spray of M. Thank you for the chance, and thanks to Jan Ewoud Vos for the informative interview!

    I am in the US.

  • As a music-oriented person and someone who often compares how perfumes move me to how music moves people emotionally, it was the talk of music that affected me most. Hail Bowie!

Let’s see, we got I and M, Black and White, Antonia and Opardu. Seems like what we need is another evocative woman’s name. I wonder who “Samantha” or “Soledad” might be?

My choice would be for Puredistance I, thank you for the opportunity.

  • I really like that he doesn’t want to know the notes so they can’t detract from his experience and the connection he makes to the art. I would love to try the sampler, as I haven’t tried any Puredistance fragrances yet. I think a cool future scent could be one inspired by the aurora borealis. Thanks for the generous draw, I am in the US!

  • Freeestyler says:

Wonderful review an amazing draw. I found everything fascinating about Jan Ewoud Vos. He is really a very interesting person and I would like to read more about him and from him. My choice would be Black. For the next scents of Puredistance I would go either for the different continents or for some historical groups or people- vikings, inca, maya as an inspiration. The spirit of the Incas.. it sounds interesting to me 🙂 i am in Germany

  • One of the most interesting read that I have had lately! Another interesting fact is the diagram of artistic inspiration, the spring of creativity. When I saw it, I immediately thought of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Of course, they are a different thing, but being an artist, your needs are different from the others, therefore you have to set, to put in a clear order the things or/and the persons that have influence over you.
Another thing that I liked and I will like a long, long time from now on is the motto that Jan’s work describes his work: ‘Less is more’. Nowadays, there is too much in the world, too much of everything! It becomes fatiguing and tedious. Nothing succeeds better than moderation.

A name that I think it would be appropriate for a Puredistance creation would be: ‘Fragments’. It will let the person decide when wearing the perfume what kind of fragments they are: fragments of dreams, stars, love.

I am from Europe and my pick would be ‘M’. Thank you!

  • the inspiration boad is inspiring 🙂 must make one myself.
maybe inspiration is a good name ? gotta copyright it quickly :))
i would go for the sample set, much needed here in Romania. greetings/

  • Roseinrose says:

I loved the fact that Jan Ewoud Vos takes an almost philosophical approach to his way of creating a perfume and not only that but his whole way of living, creating and thinking is truly enlightened. I like his belief that “less is more” which he applies in his way of living, working with qualitative means and people instead with quantity and vulgarity.
A a great name for the next Puredistance perfume that I would like to hear is the word “Deva” in Hinduism and Buddhism means a divine being or god, a “good spirit” in Hindu religion, from Sanskrit deva “a god,” originally “a shining one,” from *div- “to shine,” thus cognate with Greek dios “divine” and Zeus, and Latin deus “god” (Old Latin deivos); see Zeus.
The artistic inspiration behind this perfume with the name DEVA stems from the fact that Jan Ewoud Vos also has an office where it was first a church and then a ballet school, the divine along with beauty … DEVA sounds so feminine, it could be a name for an enlightened yet very beautiful and elegant woman.
I live in EU and I thank you for this lovely review and draw as well. In case I win and if Jan Ewoud Vos really reads my writings I leave it up to him to choose the perfume that would better suit me from the 17.5 ml Perfume Spray of his choice of I, Antonia, M, Opardu, Black or White.

  • The chessboard is a great idea, it’s both a sport and an art, unfortunately I don’t have 8 bottles of any perfume to be peasants.
An inspiration could be ice and snow and aurora borealis…
I would like to win puredistance M. in EU. thank you for the draw.

  • I loved reading about your drive! I love when people truly care about their profession, and do things from the heart. I also really enjoyed hearing the description of sitting in an Aston Martin, Roja Dove is an absolute genius. With that being said, 17.5 ml of Puredistance M would have to be my choice!

I have always hoped for a Puredistance Blue. And as the name suggests, a scent embodying the true sense of not only summer, but a gorgeous beach setting, with crystal clear water, with a refreshing drink in hand.

I am in Canada and thank you for the draw!

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

I found it fascinating that Jan Ewoud Vos is a creative director that keeps his “olfactorial virginity [so he] can much better judge the match between the fragrance and [his] concept, not being clouded by formula’s and ingredients”. How unpretentious and refreshing! I live in the US.
I think the art of Frida Kahlo could be an inspiration for the next Puredistance perfume. I hope to win the sampler.

  • tati_gheller says:

I find it fascinating that despite being creative director of one of the most revered houses in haute niche Mr. Vos retains a very unpretentious, pure, even humble approach to both his creative process, and business. Such integrity was not uncommon when the first niche houses came onstage, but has been gradually becoming somewhat of a rarity in the newest age of superstar perfumers and creative directors. It’s truly refreshing, and commands respect and admiration. Of course, the fact that he so generously considers perfumistas from across the world doesn’t hurt either!
Thank you very much for the draw, I’m in Russia, and I’d absolutely love to have the 17.5 ml spray of Opardu.

  • i think that describing Mr. Vos ‘a modern day Renaissance Man’ really captures Mr. Vos creative process.
i also loved that he values so much staying in the shadow and enjoying the results of his works – so impressive in the current niche perfume environment!

i’d love to see the ukiyo-e as well as the modern Japanese art as the inspiration for the next Puredistance scent.

my pick would be the sampler. i am in the EU – thank you for the draw!

  • I am glad that someone like Jan Ewoud Vos explained the meaning of creative direction. Any industry is harsh industry, but with people like Mr. Vos and Puredistance’s whole creative team, it feels more like art, less like trade and turnover products.
It was interesting to read about Mr. Vos well kept ‘olfactorial virginity’ and the visuals behind the new scent, White. Actually, I know all of the range except for White, and I would like to have M, if I win the draw!
I have been always enchanted by Degas’ ballerinas paintings (especially Blue Dancers), and a new scent could channel both them and the church-ballet school the Puredistance team dwells in these days! Suggestion for a center note – iris, orris butter. Suggestion for a name – Irida.
I am in Bulgaria (EU). Thank you for the chance!

  • It is a great pleasure to read about Puredistance and Mr. Jan Ewoud Vos. He explains his ideas and concept amazingly. Less than a year ago I listened him in Zagreb. It was so wonderful meeting. I wore Black that I love a lot. We had an opportunity to try all Puredistance’s perfumes, except the newest one. All the perfumes are just fabulous. The last one I tried was M, so beautiful experience. M is the one most beautiful perfumes I’ve ever tried. One of the most important parts of this article is “…to keep the name Puredistance synonymous with understated elegance and timeless beauty.” I’m sure that Mr. Jan Ewoud Vos has enormous success in this. It is fascinating how he creates his perfumes with visuals, but he’s not interested in ingredients that perfumers use. Although he is not interested in perfumer’s part of creating, his visuals and ideas are obviously enough strong and very inspiring. They fulfill the purpose and we are happy to see them in the final creation. It is probably “the high note of saxophone or trumpet” a reason why I love M so much.
Thank you for this article and a draw. I’d love to choose M. I’m in the EU, Croatia.

  • I am in Canada.

What I found fascinating about Jan Ewoud Vos as a creative director is his passion for his profession. His drive for Puredistance and vision, are both incredible and this sounds is under good hands with him in control.

I also feel that a fragrance inspired by the life of Michael Jackson would make for quite a wonderful scent. I’ve always admired him and his work, and leather would have to be a big part of the fragrance! Which I love as well.

Thanks for the draw and my choice would be 17.5 ml of Puredistance M.

i appreciate that jan ewoud vos doesn’t discuss ingredients & instead focuses on the experience he has when smelling the fragrance. it’s wonderful to read about a creative director’s trust in the designers with whom he works.

i would suggest “red” as the next fragrance as a reference to hot spices & red florals.

i would love to win the 17.5ml bottle of M. i live in the states. thank you for this opportunity!

  • I love Jan Ewoud Vos creative process. I’ve found in reading many interviews with perfumers and creative directors that sometimes there is too much focus on the notes and combination of ingredientes than the actual artistic vision. Jan Ewoud Vos point of view touches a chord with me because I think that great perfumes start with great inspirations (e.g the way Jaques Guerlain was inspired by a determined hour in the evening’s sunset). I also love that Jan Ewoud is inspired by Art Deco, since it’s one of my favorite styles of architecture and Decor. Lovely insight.
I would love if Puredistance use as referance for the next fragrance the japanese art of Ikebana.
Thanks for the draw! I live in Venezuela and my choice would be the 17.5 ml of Puredistance M

  • This truly has to be my favorite read on “Creative Directors.” Jan Thank You for allowing us into your creative space! Love the inspiration of your drive ” to create beauty that lightens up the life of people.’ I truly admire your vision and focus in keeping your drive in check. Being in the shadows allows us to keep ourselves creative and focused without the obstructive intrusions. Good for you..
I am in the US and would love the 17.5 of White. Thanks again, Jan for the in depth and informative post on what makes Puredistance profoundly unique and certainly a spark of light in my life.

  • We need more people like Jan Ewoud Vos in the world, because: “My main drive always has been to create beauty that lightens up the life of people.” This is so important in times like these, because sometimes beauty is all we have to soften the harsh edges of the world. This makes life better for people, and what else matters more than helping others? Thank you for your drive! It motivates me. I would love the chance to try Antonia, it sounds absolutely stunning, speaking of creating beauty. I am in the US, and could see inspiration for the next fragrance being the mother earth and her wood nymphs. Thanks so much for the opportunity!

  • Jan Ewoud Vos is an absolute genius. I love his vision for Puredistance. His drive is outstanding! Out of the choices, I would have to select 17.5 ml of Puredistance M! After reading about the Aston Martin leather, I had to choose it!

I would love a fragrance inspired by the life of Jimi Hendrix. I love his music and seems like a rock star scent!

    Thanks and I’m in Canada!
