CaFleureBon Celebrates National Library Week: Literary and Olfactory Spice Ships + Melange of Dune Draw

When I was in High School in the mid 70’s there were two trilogies which were the gateway to two specific genres of fiction. Many of my classmates would be carrying around copies of the three books that made up JRR Tolkein’s “The Lord of the Rings” and would begin a life of reading epic fantasy. The other trilogy was Frank Herbert’s “Dune Trilogy” which was one of the first great science-fiction sagas.

In the first book “Dune” we learn of the most important substance in the universe melange which is also called “Spice”. The Spice is used as a life extender and, in some, can unlock almost magical powers. The flaw is once you use Spice you become addicted and the price of breaking that addiction is death. Obviously Spice is also the most valuable substance in this setting and its continued supply and availability are critical. Much of the events, in the first book, center around the fight for the control of the planet Arrakis, where the Spice originates. In Dune there is an incredible amount of adventure, philosophy, and wonder mixed into Frank Herbert’s words. One thing Mr. Herbert never truly describes in any great detail is what the Spice looks like. Depending on where it is found it changes color from orange to blue, it seems it can be gas, liquid, or solid. The only thing that Mr. Herbert consistently uses to describe Spice throughout all of the books in the series is the smell of it. Spice smells like cinnamon; which means as I would turn the page the smell of cinnamon would be my imaginary accompaniment. I envisioned the huge space ships ferrying the Spice to the edges of the universe always smelling of cinnamon.

Cinnamon and spices are common notes in perfumery and there are many fragrances centered around these notes. Spicy fragrances are among my favorites. So much so that when I am asked the trite question of if I was stranded on a desert planet which one fragrance would I want my answer has been the same for the last few years; Frapin Caravelle Epicee. Caravelle Epicee translates to Spice Ship and in my mind’s eye when I’m wearing Caravelle Epicee sometimes I’m with the early merchants aboard a Dutch West India Company ship bound for home. Sometimes I am on the planet Arrakis harvesting the mélange with my Fremen brothers. No matter what I am surrounded by the smell of spices.

Caravelle Epicee was released in 2007 by Frapin as one of their first four fragrances; Jeanne-Marie Faugier was the perfumer for all four. The opening of my favorite fragrance is the heat of cinnamon and pepper ameliorated with sweet nutmeg. Cumin, cardamom, and coriander add their zestiness to the melange before setting down on a landing pad of sandalwood, gaiac and tobacco.

Caravelle Epicee is my perfumed version of the Spice of Dune. It is my fragrant addiction and while I obviously won’t expire without its presence in my wardrobe I would be very unhappy. Thankfully I can travel in my easy chair to the shores of Arrakis transported by my wearing of Caravelle Epicee.

Thanks to our friends at MiN New York we have five sample vials of the perfumed version of the Spice to give away. Five sample vials of Frapin Caravelle Epicee will be given to five commenters. To be eligible leave a comment naming your favorite library or just name your perfume you have to have if you are stranded on a desert planet. We will draw five winners via random.org on April 18, 2012.

We announce the winners only on site and on our Facebook page, so Like Cafleurebon and use our RSS option…or your dream prize will be just spilled perfume.

  • My favorite library? Well, for beauty, it’s got to be the Library of Congress, which is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. For utility, the main library at Bowling Green State University.

I’d love to try out this perfume in either one of them, of course! Thanks for doing the draw!

Hmm if I was stranded in a desert …maybe Olympic Orchards Olympic Rainforest to remind of a cooler, wetter climate.

  • My favorite library (so far) would have to be the Carnegie Library at the University of Pittsburgh…so many branches and so many floors and shelves of wonderful tomes of knowledge available to so many!!

If I had to pick one perfume to be stranded on a desert planet, it would have to be D&G BY Man (in a huge 200 ml bottle) and I would bury it deep enough in the cool sand that the heat and the sun(s) would not “turn” it! *giggles*

I have yet to ever smell any Frapin frags and want to thank MiN for this very kind draw and thank Mark for “perfuming” one of my favorite sci-fi series of all time! 😀

  • To be eligible leave a comment naming your favorite library or just name your perfume you have to have if you are stranded on a desert planet.

My favorite library would be my local Multnomah County library and the perfume I would wear if I was stranded on desert island is Dior Dune.

  • My favourite library would be the one I frequented as a child in my hometown. It had the best story books and comfortable chairs, big windows, and a big stuffed caterpillar that we kids could sit on and read. Whatever cleaner they used in the carpets made them smell good in the sun.

Stranded on a desert planet with only ONE PERFUME? Mon dieu… I think that would depend on the climate of the planet but at this moment I’m wearing and enjoying Fig Tree by SSS so I’ll go with that.

    Thanks for the draw!

  • I think the library of trinity college in Ireland is pretty awesome. I don’t know which perfume I would take, but probably something which would have mood elevating effects since I’d need to keep hopes and motivations up.

  • Don’t laugh, but if I were to become stranded on either an island or a deserted planet, I would want my bottle of Britney Spears Believe handy. Nothing sits so nicely on my skin, it’s a wonder how an inexpensive fragrance can stand out amongst other more expensive brands.

  • My desert island perfume is Ormonde Woman, and I just can’t pick a favorite library. I love the little ones with helpful librarians, and the big ones with soaring ceilings and large windows and the very old ones where the marble on the stairs has dips because of decades and decades of feet.

  • Dune–we were talking about these books just last night!
I think Diptyque Eau Lente is kind of harsh and hot–like Arrakis! I should reread, and also sniff out Caravelle Epicee.

My favorite library…hmm…. I like the downtown Boston main branch at Copley but also the small one I went to with my daycare when I was 3. They had a great children’s section! very comfy.

I think my desert island/planet perfume might be Safran Troublant. (But Ormonde Woman, Gobin Daude Seve Exquise, Caron Poivre, Frapin 1270, and a bunch of Lutens ones all immediately came to mind…. glad I don’t have to choose just one!)

  • My desert island/planet fragrance would have to be Serge Luten’s Daim Blond because that is the scent my husband loves most on me. I get to have him too, right?

  • TimeaZsofia says:

If I am stranded on a desert planet I would have Shalimar.
    Thank you for the draw.

  • My favourite library is the library of Simon Fraser University (where I work). If stranded on a desert planet I’d probably want a sort of functional perfume such as the kind of Natural perfumes made by Dominique Durbrana of Profumo.it. These typically have therapeutic properties that can kill infections and lift moods, and countless other uses, so that would make them valuable far beyond their smell.

  • Strangeways says:

My desert planet fragrance would be New York by Parfum de Nicolaï. Or maybe Gentleman by Givenchy. Not sure. Anyway, thanks for the draw.

  • Favourite library is Exeter library in New Hampshire, US designed by Louis Kahn. Can’t name a single favourite perfume…

  • If I were on a desert planet I would have to have Lancôme Miracle with me. It’s the perfume of many important moments in my life.

I have seen many beautiful libraries but the last one which impressed me was the Library of the Congrees in Washington DC.

  • Cambridge Public Library is so incredibly wonderful. Connected as they are with the huge Minute Man system, they are able to satisfy all of my reading and viewing needs!!!

  • I don’t live near it but I like the Brookline Public Library in MA, it has all kinds of interesting materials for a diverse community.

  • Tough one! I think my desert planet fragrance would have to be Youth Dew. And my favorite library is a fantasy in my mind – I have always wondered how awesome the Library at Alexandria (Egypt) was.

  • My favorite library is the brand new Park County Library in Cody, WY – stunning building and wonderful staff.

  • On a desert planet I would like to have my CD Dune perfume, because I have a lot of good memories connected to this fragrance!

  • desert planet perfume: olympic orchids arizona (i’d be dreaming of high country forests on planet earth while wearing it 🙂

favorite library: i must confess that i have completely abandoned libraries in favor of used bookstores.

  • My perfect perfume for a desert planet would be Terre d’Hermès. I don’t have any favorite library..shame on me 🙂

  • noetic owl says:

favorite library-Queens College, Flushing NY which offered spectacular views of the NYC skyline and where I went for undergrad and grad school. Perfect desert planet scent-SSS Egyptian Musk which is simple but stunning.

  • Kristen Knudsen says:

For the library, I will say Det Kongelige Bibliotek in København, Danmark. If I was stranded and could have only one fragrance it would be vintage Shalimar parfum. I don’t know if I could live without it.

  • Favorite library is the public library in my tiny rural midwestern town. If they don’t have it, they’ll get it. Those without internet access can rent space there (our local unemployment is still over 12%). The staff have taken pay cuts so they can stay functional even as government support dwindles. The library is truly the heart of our community, I don’t know what we’d do without it.

  • Desert planet perfume: Espionage, by Ayala Moriel. It’s the perfect comfort perfume for me.

  • Favorite Library would be the Library of Congress. Desert planet perfume-haven’t found it yet, but Saffron Troublant reminds me of Dune.

  • If stranded, I’d be quite happy with a bottle of terre d’hermes.

As for libraries… I generally like school libraries not public ones.

  • I absolutely love DUNE and it is so true when you thin of Spice Cinnamon is the frist thing that fits the description. If I was stranded on a desert planet I would love to have something invigorating a tuberose perfume maybe. Now concerning libraries my favorite is the National Library in Athens, the smell of old book as you enter is captivating!

  • My desert island perfume is L’Artisan Traversee du Bosphore. But that is what is on my mind today, could change tomorrow. I loved the library in which I worked, on the campus of my college in Montclair. Libraries are some of my favorite places in the world.
