CaFleureBon Blogathon: Breast Cancer Awareness 10/18/2011 + Abdes Salaam Attar Amber Chocolate “Draw for the Cure”

Amber Chocolate  is created with 100% natural ingredients by Dominique Dubrano  (aka Abdes Salaam Attar) and  blends Chocolate and Vanilla with Tonka. It is a naturally sensual fragrance; a perfect scent for a breast cancer survivor as studies show that more than 50% have long term sexual dysfunction. Most survivors will initially believe they aren’t sexy anymore as they look at their scars or unreconstructed breast. In our society of 'tits  and tatas’, healthy women  are augmenting their breasts to ridiculous sizes that don't fit their bodies. (studies show that may women who augment their breasts do not feel an improvement in their self-esteem long term).

Victoria Beckham  –  not a 'natural' role model

For the fifth year in a row, more American women have had breast augmentation than any other cosmetic surgical procedure. The newest statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that the number of breast implant procedures performed in the U.S. in 2010 was 269,203 — a 39% increase over 20000). With statistics like these is it any wonder female survivors can have a hard time coping long after the medical  procedure  has been performed?

In M. Dubrano’s composition ‘”Cocoa extract evokes an atmosphere of pleasant relaxation and induces a feeling of physical well-being”. The use of 100% natural chocolate extract used in this Abdes Salaam’s  perfume  evokes ancient cultures. The Mayans are considered one of  the most culturally advanced civilizations in history(during the Mayan Classic Age,300-900 A.D., they had cities with majestic pyramid-temples and palaces, a calendar calculated to end in the 21st century, and a complex written language that filled thousands of books). The mayans were the the first true chocolate aficionados, treasuring cacao as a restorative, mood-enhancing cure-all. It became an integral part of their society… used in ceremonies, given as gifts and incorporated into their mythologies.

I'll have what she is having

Fast forward to 2011,why are so many  women chocoholics? According to M. Dubrano it may because it is sensual foody note that stimulates our production of endorphins, a delectable substance that evokes a state of euphoria (and also may have antidepressant effects; depression is more prevalent in women). “It’s perfume favors abandonment to the hedonistic pleasures of orality, helping us taste life at the moment”, he notes.

Vanilla is another ingredient used in Amber Chocolate. One of the properties of vanilla is the feeling of well-being and of relaxation; it’s one of nature’s antidepressants. It is also one of my favorite notes in perfumery,(which explains alot).

As M. Dubrano mentions on his website ‘the aphrodisiac effect of Amber Chocolate perfume can be due to olfactory memory …“the sensual emotions experienced while enjoying cakes, pastries and creams".

'Amber Chocolate ’by Abdes Salaam Attar may be a fragrance that has the capacity to reassure and to help women with breast cancer and survivors with their sexual inhibitions, and feel at ease with the often frightening feeling of disfigurement to their bodies . M. Dubrano likens this sensual perfume to “taking a bath in Chocolate”

“The sensuality of the 'Chocolate' perfume has also a chemical explanation; some molecules of the essences  are very similar to human pheromones and have the property to tie themselves chemically with them, fixing them while putting in prominence the personal aroma, just as a dress wraps the body enhancing its physical beauty”- Abdes Salaam Attar, Perfume Composer

Six degrees of separation

1.     In 2010,  learned of Abdes Salaam  and his natural perfumery through Anya McCoy, who urged him to send me a sample of Mecca Balsam. It was lost in the mail and instead lauded by other ’mainstream’ bloggers  who do not advocate natural perfumery  on a regular basis

2.     Donna Hathaway sent Ida Meister  a sample of Amber Chocolate

3.     Ida was smitten

4.     Ida awarded Amber Chocolate Best Natural Scent of 2011 (I have never smelled it, and still have not, but I am a  candy girl  and really want too)

5.     Since Sharif  debuted on our blog, it has become one of  Didier Cholay’s favorite fragrances.

6.     When I emailed Dominique to help with the Cause he chose this fragrance.  Although I have never smelled it  it turns out it is a perfect perfume for CaFleurebon's  blog-at-thon for the Libby  Ross  Foundation’s  raison d'etre …to help breast cancer victims, survivors and their familes feel better.

  • One of the many, many things I love about CaFleureBon is the fact that you highlight natural perfumers. I feel strongly that in order to fight cancer one must flood the body and mind with all that is positive and nourishing (which would include natural perfumes made with essential oils that have healing properties).

Michelyn, I believe that I speak for many readers who commend you for also bringing to the forefront the issue with women and body image. When I was pregnant my ob/gyn had the audacity to say to me “Well you finally made it to 100 pounds. Now you are a real woman!”. Being petite, slim and, yes, small breasted 🙂 my whole life I have dodged many negative comments from friends, family and co-workers by speaking my mantra “People come in all colors, shapes and sizes”. As the mother of a teenage and preteen daughters it pains me to see the images thrust upon them by society of what constitutes “sexy and beautiful” and what an ideal woman should look like. Michelyn you have given us all something to think about as we often self-critique the beautiful bodies that G-d has given all of us:)!

This perfume sounds amazing-vanilla being one of my favorite basenotes. But I will pass on this draw so as to give someone else a better opportunity at winning.

  • After reading up on Mr. Dubrana I was taken by what he had to say about perfume and his lovely creations. To quote Mr. Dubrana “Natural perfumes, because of the very nature of the materials that they are made from, are real olfactory jewels”. What’s not to love about a line referred to as “The Scents of the Soul” with names such as “Holy Water” and ” Angelica Water” 🙂 ?

I would like enter this draw.

  • This is such a wonderful project, and with the fantastic possibility of being in a draw of this caliber it’s a win-win situation:-) Thanks for all the work and heart that CFB has put into the blogathon, I’m looking forward to reading more inspiring posts everyday of this event.
The Amber Chocolate sounds like a real winter dream fragrance, and with “scents of souls” what could be more perfect for a draw like this?
I should very much like to enter this draw too.
Thank you Michelyn and Mr Dubrana.

  • I second those commendations…for the hard work involved organizing this and the generosity of the perfumers who contributed. My life has been very stressful lately, and I find myself turning to natural perfumes. Something about them gives me a deep comfort. This Chocolate Amber perfume sounds lovely. Please put me in the draw, and thank you. (my contribution was made earlier).

  • Excellent cause, love that Natural Pefumers are taking the spotlight as i am a great fan. I also turn to aromatherapy for relaxation which includes some of my favorite Natural Perfumers. Thank you so much for opening the doors to such delights.

  • If i had to choose i think i would opt for DSH, Olfactive Studio, Parfums Delrae of Providence. But i am not picky, any of the listed perfumers are awesome.

  • I think this sounds delicious to me:) I live just outside of Hershey PA and some of the images you shared, remind me of the chocolate spa. I once got a gift certificate and was able to get a chocolate pedicure;)
I made this donation in honor of my friend and neighbor, Rebecca’s father, Fred. I am unsure of where his cancer is located, he is still a survivor and a fighter. He sees every moment on the planet as an opportunity to treat his family extra special. You can find him out taking care of the gutters on his daughters house (he has a chemo medicine unit tucked under his shirt). On the first day of pre-k, he took a tour of the classroom and wanted to meet and greet the teachers and students. He makes his wife, duaghter and granddaughter feel like royalty. He drives his wife and opens her car door grocery shops and fuels the car. He is a wonderful man. I am honestly, fighting the tears back thinking of him and what a special guy he is.
He was a high school principal and the best grandfather I have ever met. He has a warm smile and a sweet soul.
I worry when I dont see Fred, for a few days. But I dont always ask Rebecca, because if she wants to share the pain with me I know she will do so of her own willand in her own time.
With every donation we come closeer to an answer to life and to opportunity. I am very thankful to be a member of the Caflurebon readership community everyday but much more so during the blog a thons.
I am appreciative to all of the generous donors such as Abdes Salaam Attar.
I donated five today just because I wanted to wake up everyday and give something with the hope of making a difference. My confirmation number was : VTE7EECA7F
    Thanks again. See you tommorow.

  • To Asali,Claudia,Kathryn,Brigitte,Queen,Cynthia, Felicia G and our wonderful Contributor Tama Blough
I cannot thank all of you enough for your encouragement but without the generous donations of our wonderful sponsors I could not do this project.
Hernando and the Libby Ross foundation couldn’t be more thrilled.

They have a volunteer staff of 8 coordinating an entire organization.
They are a relatively small foundatio but with a huge heart and tremendous dedication.
Last week, I never imagined how much work it would be soliciting merchandise 9from over 200 companies).
I can only imagine how tired a volunteer team of 8 must feel
All our sponsors are indie companies
Some like aurore Yoga owned by Dennis Ingui (we worked at a jeans company together 15 years ago)keiko, Maria and luckyscent.com are old friends
Others like Brent and Tanja are new friends
I will keep blogging in the hopes of reaching my goal of 1 thousand dollars
Even if I fall short, I am doing this for all our readers women and men as we are learning breast cancer doesn not effect women only.

It may be October but every day is breast cancer month to the victims, the fighters, the survivors or those sadly succumb to this disease.
    Thank you all

  • What a worthy cause. We need to keep the continuous fight for a cure in the fore front
Michelyn you are doing that ..thank you!

  • Michelyn thank you for being involved in this cause that is very close to my heart. Same to the wonderful volunteers and sponsors.

I have never tried the Abdes Salaam Attars but this one sounds great.

One small drop for this cause: VXHE7F3A53E8 / $40

  • I believe that Abdes Salaam is a true healer as well as a gifted perfumer. I wear two of his perfumes, Mecca della Balsam and Cuore di Rosa. Both give me an almost palpable sensation of being secure and cared for. I would love to try Amber Chocolate. Verification #: VXYE7F306F04
