ÇaFleureBon Best Fragrances of 2020 (Ermano and Michelyn) Part 1+ Hall of Fame Draw

Michelyn Camen, Editor in Chief of CaFleureBon and Editor Ermano Picco

For as long as ÇaFleureBon has been giving end of year Best Fragrance awards (2010)(2011), (2012), (2013)(2014), (2015), (2016) (2017), (2018) and (2019) there was always the question, “was this a good year for perfume”? Can we even judge Best Fragrances in 2020 when the pandemic shut down all the major trade events including Esxence, Pitti Fragranze and TFWA in Cannes, where many on the ÇaFleureBon team discovered perfumes from new companies, from established companies large and small, were able to chat one on one with perfumers and hug our friends-in-fragrance. We usually smell 500+ fragrances every year. In 2020 we both spent nearly five months in strict lockdown as well as sheltered in place. This year it was at least half that amount. Many companies decided to hold off on releases, many retailers and suppliers were on lockdown. Most of us at ÇaFleureBon experienced personal and professional hardships which is why, unlike past years, there are no “ÇaFleureBon Worst Ofs” this year, as the worst of 2020 was the year itself.  Somehow, we still smelled a lot of perfume; either samples were sent to us or we purchased them ourselves. This year’s ÇaFleureBon Best Fragrances of 2020 will be a four-day event. Tomorrow Ermano and I will announce our respective top ten ÇaFleureBon Best Fragrances of 2020, followed by Ida’s and Despina’s top ten, Lauryn’s and dana’s and closing with Nicoleta’s and Elena’s ÇaFleureBon best fragrances. There will be draws aplenty. Michelyn Camen, Editor-in Chief

ÇaFleureBon BEST TRENDS: FEEL GOOD FRAGRANCES

During 2020, fragrances that made us feel good and smell great were essential to our well-being. “Feel good perfumes”, might not be as complex as more experimental fragrances, but I admire the courage of crafting a new perfume in the middle of a pandemic. This is especially true for small independent houses who don’t have the resources that are available to large corporations. We all succeeded together and despite our differences, we are one community. That’s a trend that I hope is is going to continue for many years. –Michelyn

Best of Cafleurebon Perris Monte Carlo Mimosa Tanneron

Olfactory speaking, this “feel good” mood has brought back sweet, honeyed florals like mimosa (Perris Montecarlo Mimosa Tanneron and Masque Milano Ray-flection are two exquisite examples of this), broom, rose, violet (a luminous embodiment of this is surely Hiram Green Vivacious) and cherry blossom (how to forget the poetic Sakura Imperial by Lucien Ferrero?), but also white florals like jasmine (Le Galion Jasmin, Serge Lutens Fils de Joie and Amouage Ashore just to name a few) and ylang ylang (Antonio Alessandria’s Rusty Vibes created to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of ÇaFleureBon). Healing plants like lavender, mint and chamomile as well made a comeback especially in their softer, more floral and delicate hues rather than the herbal, corroborating side. Speaking about citrus, this was the year of the happiest and most vibrant of them all.

Laboratorio Olfattivo Mandarino

Special mention goes to Monsieur Ellena who brought us back to Italy and dolce vita with Laboratorio Olfattivo Mandarino. Michelyn wears it each morning.

Vanilla is central to Anatole LeBreton Fleur cachee

Vanilla has always been important in perfume and this comforting and precious spice shined in full glory in 2020.  A few examples are Perris Montecarlo Vanille de Tahiti, Anatole Lebreton Fleur Cachée, and recently Maison Tahité which explores the many facets of vanilla. –Michelyn and Ermano

ÇaFleureBon HARDEST WORKING PERSONS IN PERFUME: DAWN SPENCER HURWITZ AND SARAH McCARTNEY

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz of DSH Perfumes best of 2020 CaFleureBon

I might as well give this award to Dawn Spencer Hurwitz of DSH Perfumes and Sarah McCartney of 4160 Tuesdays every year. Dawn is always prolific, and used this time of “isolation”  and disconnection to connect; she created some of her best work to date, including BIWA that she composed in honor of our beloved Robert Herrmann, who gave her a list of ingredients before he passed (you will see her perfumes on many a ÇaFleureBon best fragrances of 2020 list over the next few days). Dawn also hosts weekly Instalive sessions, where viewers learn how to create accords, offer suggestions and all the while, Dawn is homeschooling her four-year-old son, packing orders and dreaming of new scents. In many ways Dawn Spencer Hurwitz is the embodiment of one of her most coveted fragrances –The Scent of Hope. That is the spirit of 2020. Turning a bad year into a blessing.Michelyn

Sarah McCartney of 4160Tuesdays

Sarah McCartney of 4160Tuesdays courtesy Sarah

Everybody had to work harder to survive this year, especially independent perfumers, so my award goes to everybody who started a new enterprise or even  started a new project. Sarah McCartney  launched 18 new fragrances for 4160Tuesdays, held zoom yoga sessions, and along with Contributor Sam Scriven aka Iscentyou aday.com, is writing a book. Ermano just discovered Astrid Weinstock of Astrid Perfume launched about 50 new fragrances. –Ermano and Michelyn

RESTORING VINTAGE PERFUMES

Chapeau to Coty, not the US Company but the French Association François Coty “La Cité des Parfums” that oversees the Prix François Coty. In particular kudos to Veronique Coty for the great commitment to the preservation of the family heritage and the Art of Perfumery, for 2020 saw the restoration of three glorious perfumes from this legendary house. A limited-edition box containing La Rose Jacqueminot (1904), L’Origan (1905) and Jasmin de Corse (1906) restored in collaboration with Firmenich perfumer Daphne Bugey was released in 300 pieces. -Ermano

MASQUE MILANO Creative directors Alessandro Brun and Riccardo Tedeschi

ÇaFleureBon BEST NICHE HOUSE AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR: MASQUE MILANO/ Alessandro Brun and Riccardo Tedeschi

Masque Milano had a great year, celebrating their 10th anniversary and releasing an entire new line dedicated to women, crafted through collaborations with perfumeuses only. The result is the white and gold dressed “Le donne di Masque” which bottles three different characters;  the silky musky floral Dolceacqua (Delphine Thierry), the sensual floriental Petra (Cécile Zarokian) and the coquettish floral-gourmand Madeleine (Fanny Bal).  In addition, Ray-Flection by Alex Lee debuted; literally a ray of sunshine… honey and mimosa for the soul. Both Alessandro and Riccardo held online Instalives and “smell alongs” through Google Meets that engaged the fragrance community-Ermano and Michelyn

Shawn Maher perfumer of Chatillon Lux and Maher Olfactive

 Perfumer Shawn Maher

ÇaFleureBon BEST INDIE HOUSE and PERFUMER: SHAWN MAHER/CHATILLON LUX/MAHER OLFACTIVE

St. Louis, Missouri based Shawn Maher had one of the best years of his career for both his brands Chatillon Lux and Maher Olfactive. With one exception, Madame Chouteau Extrait de Parfum for American Perfumer, all his perfumes were launched during the pandemic.

MAHER OLFACTIVE : April – Crystal Moon Eau de Parfum, July – Treachery Extrait de Parfum, December – Orris Forest Eau de Parfum/Tempo Rubato Extrait de Parfum

CHATILLON LUX : June – La Petite Prairie Eau de Toilette, November – Confluence Eau de Toilette

Each of Shawn Maher’s fragrances are examples of independent perfumery as olfactive storytelling and in 2020 he demonstrated his willingness to expand his horizons and experiment with new raw materials.  Each of his perfumes embody the American spirit of exploration… even when it’s your native home town (you will be seeing Shawn’s perfumes on Top Ten Lists).-Michelyn

Laurie Stern of Velvet and Sweet Pea's perfumery Best CaFleureBon 2020 Natural perfumer

ÇaFleureBon BEST NATURAL PERFUME HOUSE and PERFUMER: LAURIE STERN of VELVET & SWEET PEA’S PURRFUMERY and TANJA BOCHNIG of APRIL AROMATICS.

El Cerrito, California based Laurie Stern has been a perfumer and animal conservationist since 2000. It all came together in 2020 when she created the all-natural (no isolates, we/re talking pure ylang-ylang based Luminous Lemurs. Fifty percent of the cost was donated to CentreValBio, a not-for-profit organization that supports these endangered mammals. Creating one of the best perfumes of her career Laurie also stayed true to her personal passion of helping communities (people and animals). Lemurs’ natural habitat is Madagascar. Laurie has studied these unique primates and used many indigenous materials from that magical island, sparing no cost, nutmeg, cinnamon and clove.  Lemurs like a lot humans, use scent to attract a mate; both lemurs and perfumistas use scent on the wrist. As someone who has embraced natural perfumery since 2007, trust me when I say that to create a fruit accord from all-natural ingredients is akin to Matisse painting flowers from his imagination.-Michelyn

Hiram Green of Hiram Green Perfumes new perfume for 2020 is named vivacious

Honorable Mention to Hiram Green, whose Vivacious was one of the best violet perfume I have smelt in many years… natural or otherwise – Michelyn

 Tanja Bochnig of April Aromatics

Tanja Bochnig photo Pavel Becker

And the award goes to Tanja Bochnig of April Aromatics for releasing the stunning Lotus Rising. As a special gift to brighten up our spirits, perfumer Tanja Bochnig used a vintage Pink Lotus absolute and a vintage Blue Lotus absolute both from her past trips to India to release a refined, mellow and textured floral bouquet. I cannot remember these rare and tough to work with materials composed in such uplifting and unique way. –Ermano

ÇaFleureBon BEST PERFUMER: RODRIGO FLORES-ROUX AND ANTONIO GARDONI OF BOGUE PROFUMO

For Porter sa peau, created for photographer Roberto Greco, Rodrigo Flores-Roux proved once again that he’s the magician of florals and a great master perfumer that bridges tradition and modernity.Ermano

Perfumer Antonio Gardoni has his own aesthetic, yet is open to creative collaborations. This year BOGUE PROFUMO OOOH! For ÇaFleureBon, Berceuse Allegreto 7.2 as well as Doleur 2 for Freddie Albrighton had very different visions. All three are brilliant examples of  a great perfumer’s unique signature, even when interpreting others’ ideas. -Michelyn

Roberto Greco Porter Sa Peau 2020 best of perfumes

ÇaFleureBon BEST FRAGRANCES OF THE YEAR: ROBERTO GRECO PORTER SA PEAU AND ATELIER DES ORS ROUGE SARAY

Roberto Greco Porter sa peau conveys by its very name the deep, intimate aesthetics of this project; matching the stunning visual research Roberto Greco pursued over the past three years about skin and its interplay with light. As traces of classics from Antonio Canova to Sarah Moon lie underneath the overexposed, misty photography series, the same you can sense the diaphanous erotic tension of aldehydic glories from Worth Je Reviens to Dior Dune inhaling Porter Sa Peau. And yet the creative collaboration between Mr. Greco and Rodrigo Flores-Roux rewrites the codes of effortless sensuality. –Ermano and Michelyn

Atelier des Ors Rouge Sarây review

2020 was also a year of travel themed perfumes and none was more suggestive than Atelier des Ors Rouge Saray. Evoking the deserts of the Middle East, as caravans laden with delectable dates, sensual spices and fresh plums of Petra carried precious aromatics, I was transported to another time, at a time when I needed to be anywhere but in lock down. One of the best gourmands I have experienced and decidedly different than anything else I smelled this year. –Michelyn

Valentino Voce Viva review

ÇaFleureBon BEST BOTTLE VALENTINO VOCE VIVA

ÇaFleureBon BEST LIMITED EDITION GUERLAIN FOL AROMEAND ESTEE LAUDER BEAUTIFUL ABSOLU

Some perfumistas might have killed for a bottle of Guerlain Fol Arome that was reissued this year by inhouse perfumer Thierry Wasser who reworked the original formula Jacques Guerlain created in 1912 as a more mysterious brother to the famous L’Heure Bleue with which it also shares the “Coeur enversé” iconic bottle. Only 964 pieces were made available.

If it wasn’t for my cousin, I would never have tried  Estee Lauder Beautiful Absolu. He knows I do “something with perfume” and ordered it from MACY’s as a surprise. I remember Beautiful from the 1980s,  a A BIG TUBEROSE and one I remember not liking. Our rising star of 2019, Mackenzie Reilley dialed down the tuberose and amped up the fresh green magnolia, retaining the DNA of the original, but more modern to my nose.  I have been wearing it a lot to my surprise. The box is a collector’s piece and uses the art of Andy Warhol.-Michelyn

Digital Scent Festival

ÇaFleureBon BEST FRAGRANCE EVENT: SCENT FESTIVAL

No live fragrant events took place in 2020, at least in person. And yet this turned into a great opportunity for t online panels and virtual events. Our pick as the best fragrance event so goes to Digital Scent Festival, the digital-native deep dive created by Yosh Han in collaboration with Aroma Village that originally was supposed to run six weeks, but kept going… from April 14th 2020- August 27th 2020. 60 perfumers presented and SCENT FESTIVAL was one of the first groups to actively promote African American perfumers and support diversity. –Ermano and Michelyn

Angelos Balamis of Angelos Creations Olfactives

Angelos Balamis

ÇAFLEUREBON RISING STAR:  ANGELOS BALAMIS OF ANGELOS CREATIONS OLFACTIVES AND JEROME DI MARINO of TAKASAGO

Angelos Balamis of Angelos Créations Olfactives: Editor dana sandu introduced our readers to the young Thessaloniki perfumer in her review of Eau de Vertu.  He was delighted so he sent some of us samples in the Fall. His story is one of raw talent and determination.  In 2014, Aggelos went to Paris for three months and studied perfumery with emphasis on vintage techniques and raw materials.  With nine fragrances in his line, and an innate understanding of creating perfumes that don’t smell like any others, he’s one to watch.

Jerome di Marino of Takasago

Jérôme Di Marino via cosmeticbusiness

A young perfumer at Takasago who I never heard of before, Jérôme Di Marino. Mentored by Françis Kurkdjian, he has begun to compile impressive creations  striding between commercial and niche with perfumes for Burberry, Carven and Elie Saab, but also for Molton Brown, Masaki Matsushima and Une Nuit Nomade. I just happened to smell his commercial fragrances only, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Di Marino’s creations in the next years appear as the nose for top notch exclusive brands or perhaps winning a FiFi.-Ermano

ÇaFleureBon BEST DISCOVERY: DER DUFT

Photographer film-maker and perfumer Anselm Skogstad launched his line of four fragrances: Pride, Bubble, Grasse, Monopteros and Cinematic during a global pandemic.  Der Duft translated from the German means “The Scent” and each scent is a story, sometimes created in cooperation with other perfumers that he respects.: “I wanted to create a perfume house with a brand name that conveys a simple message and intention to anyone interested in scents.” And Anselm did.-Michelyn

ÇaFleureBon BEST FRAGRANCE BOOK: HANDBOOK OF GREAT ITALIAN PERFUMERY

Worth a mention is the “Handbook of Great Italian Perfumery – Fifty years of exceptional scents” by Marika Vecchiattini published by Silvana Editore. The book covers a very personal, large selection of fragrances from Italian brands spanning from the late ‘70s to nowadays, as seen through the experience and funny storytelling of the author. –Ermano

DIS-connect perfumes

 ÇaFleureBon BEST COLLABORATION : DIS_CONNECT

Disconnection is something we all experienced this year, but way before the pandemic, Francesca Gotti, Francesco Romero and Omer Ipekci started the artistic project DIS-CONNECT to express this status through design, image and perfume. Unpredictably it turned out to be such a strong experience that can be sensed in a limited-edition photo-book and a brutalist eco-friendly box, plus three perfumes, 01-Decay, 02-Concrete, 03-Paradox. No doubt the award goes for this reason to DIS-CONNECT. –Ermano

I recuse myself from the four CaFleureBon 10th anniversary collaborations. It’s the right thing to do-Michelyn

Ricardo Ramos is a perfumer and creative director based in Grenada,  located in Andalusia Spain, who I first learned about through former Sr. Contributor Marianne Butler when she wrote The Three You should be Wearing. A perfumista friend mailed me a package of some of his more recent work and Mangoes Khus was the standout. Imagine Vetiver (khus) intertwining the fruity inner flesh of a mango. His co perfumer is Jorge Lee, who you may remember from Nishane. His website is here

My Hall of Fame goes to Olivier Durbano who silently yet steadily working in the last 16 years grew his Parfums de Pierres Poèmes , staying true to his values both in spirits and aesthetics. He’s been so brave this year also to crown this milestone launching his 16th perfume ARAM dedicated to Syria and its stones bathed in a breathtaking light, an inspiration coming from Olivier’s memories of his first trips where he used to travel in search of precious gems for his unique jewelry.-Ermano

Neil Morris of Neil Morris Fragrances and Sarah Horowitz-Thran of Sarah Horowitz Parfums

Neil Morris of Neil Morris fragrances is the Godfather of American Perfumery and Sarah Horowitz-Thran is the goddess/GodmotherBoth began their fragrance careers in the Boston area. In addition to his core line there is the Vault which contain some of his most sought-after perfumes.  Neil Morris is known for his bespoke fragrances, which capture the personal history of a client and their happy memories… and bottle it.  Sarah Horowitz-Thran began her career in 1989 in Boston, and moved her business in California in 1994. • If I am lucky to win I would love to win Dark Season by Neil Morris. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • A beautiful review by Ermano and Michelyn. Just in case I win I would love to win City Rain by Neil Morris. Thanks from the UK

  • As someone who’s in a country with lockdowns in one way or another since March, I wholeheartedly agree that 2020 is the worst. Importing because near impossible during the hard lockdowns against the disease, and thankfully there are perfumes here to remind me that I didn’t lose my scent of smell. But as Dawn did with her perfume, we should try a bad year into a blessing. Long commutes for me became a WFH session with extra time for myself. This year’s best fragrances article can be summed up as a article for our continuous struggle against odds stacked against us. We have perfumers who still produce scents while helping others, and even large companies helped make sanitizers for everyone’s use. I hope next year will be better, and I’m claiming it that it’s better than this year.

I’m from the Philippines, would like to try Cafe from the Vault collection.

  • I really loved reading through this one. Shawn maher is at the top of the list to test in 2021 for me and DSH is a true legend in the game!!

  • I thought that the list was both magnificent and thorough, Cafleurebon really proves why they are the best in fragrance journalism. From the Neil Morris Vault, it would be amazing if I could win Burnt Amber. From Sarah Horowitz, I would like to win Coconut Milk. I live in Florida, the United States. Thanks!

  • This year has been hard on everyone, it’s surprising the that many of the houses were able to release any new fragrance let alone 50 as Astrid Perfumes was able to and Dawn hosting classes and Sarah McCartney teaching yoga, so many made use of their time in lockdown while they were creating new fragrances, such a great drive they have. If I was chosen to win I would choose Neil Morris October perfume or Sarah Horowitz Now perfume. I live in USA.

  • Wow! This was quite a read and a long article, but was totally worth it!

I would love to win RUMI from Neil. A fragrance inspired by the poet Rumi sounds like a great idea to me!

    Thanks! EU

  • Bryant Worley says:

Ermano’s and Michelyn’s ÇaFleureBon Best Fragrances of 2020 were fantastic.<⁷ As someone who’s in a country with lockdowns in one way or another since March, I wholeheartedly agree that, in my lifetime, 2020 has to be the worst year ever.

From the Neil Morris' "Vault Collection", I would like to receive" Burnt Amber".

From Sarah Horowitz Parfums, I would like to receive "The Now".

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • My fiancée loves gardenia and I think that the creation of Mr. Neil Morris Intimate Gardenia would make a great gift to her.
Thank you for this wonderful chance. I am based in the EU.

  • Congratulations to all the winners!
I would love to win Neil Morris’ Dark Season.
    I live in the UK

There must have been some difficult choices in this list. I find that in these difficult times a lot of people stood out by helping others through their work and with their positive approach. Fragrance has helped me deal with stress and anxiety, It took me away from the negativity around me and soothed my mind.

Thank you for keeping us entertained and informed in this tumultuous year!

  • Congratulation for all amazing perfumers .
I will be more than happy to win Cathedral .
    Best regards,
    Lili

  • Great Troubled Year review!! Love to see Vivacious and Hiram in your list. I´ve just discovered in your article Ricardo Ramos who lives in Granada and it´s worth a visit to his study! I would like to win Leather Garden by Neil Morris and I would like to wish a happy new year to Ermano, Michelyn and Neil Morris! I live in Spain, EU

  • I really enjoyed reading these thank you and have some new scents flagged up to try. I would love to try Neil Morris scents and Cafe particularly appeals. I am in U.K.

  • The one from Neil Morris’ Vault would be Le Parfum, C’est Ma Vie. I love this name, and in my modest opinion, it could represent our resilience against 2020. The world is going crazy but let’s just smell another beautiful creation ☺.
    From France.

  • Once again, the selection of perfumes and perfumers for 2020 was interesting and varied. It was both sad and wonderful to see how the fragrant world adapted to 2020’s terrible conditions, with hand sanitizers as an extra product, with online events and webinars rather than physical ones, with scents that try to evoke a state of calm, safety and well-being. I would like to give a heartfelt thanks to all these wonderful perfumers for being so brave and creative and going forward in spite of the storm!
As an individual piece of info that caught my eye, I will mention the 25 year long activity of Neil Morris, earning him the unofficial title of “father of American perfumery”. And as a potential prize, should I be so lucky to win, I would choose one fragrance from his Vault collection. The choice was extremely difficult as I surfed his website and noticed so many wonderful, inspired scented stories among his titles. But as much as Izmir, Dark Season or North Woods made my heart skip a beat, my choice would be the soothing, familiar comfort of OCTOBER.
Thank you for the effort you put into this complex and insightful article and for the draw!

  • I really liked that the article highlighted the works of many indie perfumers, whose works deserve to be more widely known.

I live in the UK and would love to win Neil Morris’ Assam, as I love tea!

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I’d love to try October from Neil Morris’s Vault collection. The combination of pumpkin, apples, and a wood fire sound really good for a fall day. I’d also like to try Sarah Horowitz’s Perfect Nectar. A nice tropical scent is always refreshing in the summertime, and the combination of mango and papaya sound really good. Nice to see Laboratorio Olfattivo Mandarino make the cut. That one sounds really good too. Good luck to everyone. I live in Maryland USA.

  • A stellar overview, as always, Michelyn and Ermano!
I didn’t particularly miss the “worst of” mentions, since Michelyn was absolutely right – 2020 was bad enough itself.
I’m in agreement with most of the choices here, especially concerning the two best fragrances of the year – both exceptional and stunning, although as different as they can be from one another.
I’m taking notes to try and sample all the scents I haven’t yet had access to, and are mentioned above.
I’d be ecstatic to win a bottle by Mr. Neil Morris, whose work I’ve been wanting to try for a long time now.
And since I love Ida, I think my first choice would be the perfume that bears her name!
Thank you for this wonderful piece, I’m looking forward to your respective top-10s tomorrow.
    Love form France (EU).

  • Please allow me a second comment, since I hit the “post” button too soon.
I’m especially happy to see my friend and fellow Thessalonikian, Aggelos Balamis, being featured as a “rising star” of the year – his inaugural fragrance collection is indeed that beautiful.
Equally happy to see my dear friend, Marianne Butler, being honoured as one of the “most valuable perfume people” of 2020.
Wishes for a Happy New Year to all!

  • I enjoyed your choices, but it was long; why not split it into several parts? I’m definitely a fan of DSH! And I admire the pioneering spirit of Neil Morris and Sarah Horowitz-Thran. I’d love to try Morris’s Fetish and Horowitz-Thran’s Perfect Gardenia… quite a name to live up to!

  • In this nice review, Michelyn and Ermano mentioned many fragrances I enjoyed discovering this year. My favorite part was the “feel good” selection, where Perris Mimosa Tanneron probably wins as best for me. I am also very curious about Ferrero Sakura, which is on my to-try list. If I were lucky enough to win, I’d love Neil Morris Burnt Amber. I am in the Dallas area, USA.

  • For the Neil Morris, I would like to win Flowers for Men: Lilac.

For Sarah Horowitz, I would like to win Hereafter.

I live in North Carolina in the US.

  • This is definitely a great list. I discovered a lot of the things that are mentioned here through this website. I’ll keep looking forward to everything you post here in 2021 for sure. I would love to get Neil Morris – Dark Season. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • Hi! I would love to win Cafe from the Vault Collection! Thank you Ermano and Michelyn!
    Love from the Philippines

  • That was an amazing throwback to a year on Çafleurebon. Despite that 2020 has been so difficult, it is nice to read all these beautiful things that were released this year. I’m glad to see Anatole Lebreton’s Fleur Caché mentioned under best vanilla.
I have experienced first hand how hard Sarah McCartney has worked this year being a member of the Scenthusiasm Patreon group and glad to see her mentioned alongside the hard-working Dawn Spencer-Hurwitz.
Der Duft has also been one of my favourite discoveries. My favourite being Pride.
All in all a great list and enjoyable read, thank Michelyn and Ermano for your hard work as well. I love Neil’s perfumes and Dark Earth is on my wishlist. Marit in the UK

  • Nothing wrong with smelling only 250 perfumes in a year. If chosen I’d love the Perfect Vanilla from Sarah. US

  • Dearest Michelyn, I am so honored that you chose me and dear friend and parfumeur extraordinaire, Sarah Horowitz-Thran, as the Godfather and Godmother of American perfumery. I am so honored to be in such good company. I look forward to sending one of your readers a perfume from The Vault! Love you, Michelyn, Love you, Sarah! Happy, Healthy and Fragrant New Year to all!

  • So happy for Ellen Covey for retaining the rights to her composition. I’ve tried both and much prefer the NightFlyer scent. I’m also following Shawn Maher. Kudos to him for his interesting fragrances and his output during a pandemic. If I’m fortunate enough to win, I would like City Rain from Neil Morris since I love an ozonic scent or Origins Story from SHP because I love the notes she chose to commemorate the beginnings of her olfactory journey. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • Brilliant piece! I tried Mandarino by Laboratorio Olfattivo and it is a little gem, an enchanting tribute to my beautiful home country.

If I am lucky to win, I would like October by Neil Morris. The notes are very evocative to me.
    I live in the UK

  • I am beyond honored to be mentioned, and in such inspiring company! Thank you Michelyn for including me in the Hall of Fame, and all you and the team at Caffleurebon do for our world of perfumery. I appreciate you more than words, and am humbled to be included.
    Love,
    Sarah❤️

  • So many new fragrances for me to try! Thanks for the comprehensive reviews. I would love to try Dark Season from the Vault collection if I am the lucky winner.

  • I think that Michelyn and Ermano’s article is helpful and interesting, and I plan to refer back to it sometimes. If I win a Neil Morris fragrance then I would choose “Cathedral”. If I win a Sarah Horowitz fragrance then I would choose “Hereafter”. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • What a treat! A great article that made my morning and lengthen a wish list for 2021.
Since I’ve been longing for summer and traveling I would love to win Hula by Neil Morris. I live in the EU.

  • ScentitarFragrance says:

Anyways, thanks for this chance, beautiful blog and helping us learn more and more ! izmir by niel morris from the vault collection and Hereafter by sarah horowitz have caught my eye and i would adore them ! Much love. I live physically in the usa, ms.

  • Thank you CaFleureBon for another fabulous article! I’ve learned so much about notes, fragrances and especially the perfumers. If lucky, I’d choose Earthtones #3 North Woods (Neil Morris) or Lioness (Sarah Horowitz). Luck to all! Mich USA

  • What a strange year to try and pick the best of anything. I would certainly agree with Sarah M being one of the hardest working people in perfume – the woman never seems to stop!!
Hiram Green’s scents have always been favourites of mine, and Vivacious sounds heavenly!
I would be honoured to receive a bottle of Neil Morris’s Dark Season should I be lucky enough to win.
    I live in Canada

  • Claumarchini says:

I have started to get an interest in niche and artistic perfumery during lockdown, thanks to a friend who started a blog (and advised me to follow Cafleurebon), and now I cannot live without it! I love your reviews and articles, every day I can’t wait to read the new post(s). This best of is really very interesting, excellent to remember everything I have read over the months! I’d love to win Hula from Neil Morris. Greetings from Milan, Italy

  • Laboratorio Olfattivo Mandarino is one of the releases from this year that I plan to get eventually. The bottle for Valentino Voce Viva is, indeed, beautiful.

  • Great article, learned many names and a lot of info from it. I would be happy to win Dark Season by Neil Morris, as a Finn, it would be awesome for me to smell his interpretation of my country’s smells during winter. I am in the EU, thanks for the draw!

  • Michelyn and Ermano, huge love and deepest thanks for including me, the Purrfumery, and Luminous Lemurs in your Best Fragrances this crazy year! I am so delighted and honored to be in the company of everyone here! Yay! Thanks to everyone at Ca Fleure Bon, too! It’s a very interesting article, and I look forward to learning more!
    XOXO~Laurie Stern

  • I would love to win Midnight Moon from Neil Morris’ vault collection and Light Comes from Within from Sarah Horowitz Parfums. What a wonderful draw. I thought your Best Fragrances were thoughtful and varied. I was very interested to read of a number of people I did not recognize. Thanks Michelyn and Ermano so much for this opportunity and many thanks to Neil Morris and Sarah Horowitz-Thran for making this draw possible. I’m in the USA

  • Thank you dear Michelyn and Ermano for the honor <3
I give a hearty hug to my fragrant twin across the pond, Sarah, who I adore and love sharing this honor with!!
And huge congrats to Sarah & Neil, and everyone on your exhaustively fab list of 2020's Best 🙂
I love our fragrant community so very much and am truly happy to see all that was made of a very difficult and intense year. I am humbled and honored to be a part of it.

  • Oh wow, thank you so much! This year was an amazing year for perfume, and I know that many (including myself) used perfume as a way to find happiness in dark times. I am so honored to be…well…honored. Thank you so much! I can’t believe it!

  • Loooove this article! So many nice thoughts about what makes a perfumer’s work truly special or different. In this year of 2020 it’s nice to know some shining stars are out there!

If I won I would want the Parfum d’Ida from Neil Morris because Ida’s reviews always make me want the perfumes that she raves over. I need to know what a scent that is dedicated to her smells like!

    In Canada.

  • I am curious about Neil’s fragrances as he is praised as being the Godfather of american perfumery. Coming from CaFleureBon, that is bold statement and I am sure that Neil has build up quite a reputation among the creators in order to be given that name.
From his Vault collection I am mostly curious about TRANCE. Thanks. Europe.

  • I am in Europe, so I am only eligible for Neil Morris’ fragrances! I see that he has a great portfolio with many and different fragrances that you can choose from! Posh sounds very interesting to me with the notes of vanilla, plum blossom and blue musk!
    Thank you!

  • I like Neil’s description of his Intimate Vanilla: a vanilla not overly sweet and a vanilla for grown-ups. I think me and my husband would both enjoy this one equally.
    Europe. Thanks!

  • Michelyn and Ermano, first of all, I want to thank you for this review. When I was reading it, I was literally nodding to myself “Yes, I agree, the Coty Association have done a marvelous job”, “Yeah, Sarah and Dawn definitely deserve all the praise” and “Ellena has done it again, I’m with you on that, Michelyn!”.

I’d be happy to win Neil Morris’s Cathedral. I’m from Russia

  • I love all fragrances, but from the ones described above, I have to admit that Voce Viva was a pretty nice surprise, after a year of designer fragrances with so many tuberose in all shapes and levels, this designer fragrance was a revelation. I’m also very curious about Mimosa Tanneron from Perris Monte Cralo, as I’m searching for a mimosa scented fragrance. Because I live in Romania, the option is Neil Morris.

  • Dear Ermano and Michelyn: Your article was refreshing and inspiring! I’ve been a little out of the look this year trying to keep my own little business afloat but reading your reviews and descriptions about all the creativity that goes into the artisanal brands have me convinced that the perfume industry is alive and well! Congratulations to all perfumers and perfumes recognized here. I’ve always loved mimosa so thanks for opening up with Mimosa Tanneron! Can’t wait to try it!
    -Ruth Sutcliffe

  • Fantastic year! We still had good things happening this year. I would like to win Hologram from from the Vault. I live in the US.

  • This was great! Cafleurebon is the best! I really love the categories especially best Indie perfumer being Shawn Maher since I bought Weinstrasse. Also I will order samples of porter Sa peau from Luckyscent
My choice would be Sarah Horowitz Thran perfect coconut
    USA

  • Hi, I’m new to the blog. I went down the perfume rabbit hole 8 years ago and am loving every minute of my perfume journey. I follow TheScented Hound and Undina’s Looking Glass and saw a link to your blog.
Wonderful list! I’m exploring the details. If I win I would choose Neil Morris’s Adrift. Thanks for the draw.

  • Danny Constantinescu says:

I’ve been wanting Gotham for so many years i lost count, after finishing a small decant given by a good friend. I bought the perfume dorctly6feom Neil no less than 3 times and each time the anti-perfume gods conspired against me getting my hands on this perfume, each time ending back in Neil’s hands, not mine. I’m still hopeful though. I live in London.

  • Lovely list. Atelier des Ors Rouge Saray is my favorite from those I’ve tried. I also can’t wait to test Chanel Le Lion. It sounds perfect. I would like to enter the draw for Neil Morris Burnt Amber. I’ve yearned to try it ever since the review on this site earlier this year. I live in Denmark, EU.

  • Living in the US and after reading this round up I am also intrigued by Luminous Lemurs. 🙂 I live in the U.S. Lots to love in these offerings, but from the Vault collection I am most interested in Mystic Dragon, and Coconut Milk

  • fleurdetilleul says:

Wow! This is such a thorough evaluation and so many categories, it’s amazing! Every year I’m looking forward to your awards! It’s really fun!
I’m from the EU and I’d love to win Dark Season of Neil Morris Fragrances, it sounds like winter heaven! Thank you for the chance!

  • What captivated me the most was the Shawn Maher spotlight. I was able to find out about these releases thanks in part to the blog! For the draw, I would love to win Swoon by Neil Morris since the fragrance is based on a perfume movie.
    From USA.

  • I must say I am suffering from information overload, and I wonder how Michelyn and Ermano keep track of all the great perfumers and perfumes in their heads. Congratulations to all who are listed in this and upcoming “Best of…” lists. I haven’t tried many listed, but have had the good fortune of trying 4160 Tuesdays (Sarah McCartney) and Maher Olfactive creations this year. And they are very different, unique and intriguing to me – compared to standard perfumes in the market, even from reputable big brand names.

Thanks for all the work you do, Michelyn and your talented team, plus the many perfumers whose art makes all this possible. Especially this year.

If I were to win this generous draw, I’d choose Burnt Amber from Neil Morris Vault collection, and The Now from Sarah Horowitz Parfums collection. Writing from the USA.

  • I’m with Ermano – I crave to smell Velvet and Sweet Peas! Thanks to the perfumers who created hand sanitizer during the beginning of the pandemic, and thanks to the people who didn’t hoard the mainstream sanitizers in the shops! I was happy to see the L’occitane Verveine Mandarin, it was the first step out of mainstream fragrance for me. Sadly, they discontinued my favorite Neroli. I’ll have to check out this one. So many good fragrances to add to my sample list. If I am the lucky winner I would choose Cathedral by “The Godfather”. USA.

  • vickalicious says:

I LOVE this style of post! I discovered this blog only this past Summer, and I recognize a lot of these fragrances from previous posts. Thank you for also linking to the previous years…I will definitely check those out. I would love to try Dark Season by Neil Morris or Perfect Gardenia by Sarah Horowitz. Thanks for this post, and for the giveaway! Located in the USA.

  • I like how Neil Morris and Sarah Horowitz-Thran are described as the Godfather and Godmother of American perfumery.
I would love to win Neil Morris Burnt Amber.
    Saludos From Mexico!

  • wallygator88 says:

Ermano, Michelyn – Fantastic curation for the best of 2020. It’s been a hard year and it is good to see so many perfumers stiill being creative and using the pandemic as an inspiration to make others feel good.

If I were to win, I would request either Neil (Dark Seasons does sound good) or Sarah (The Discovery Set of the perfumers palleeette does intrigue) to pick their favourites from that lineup, keeping in mind the pandemic and which one of their fragrances lightens their mood.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Ermano’s  and Michelyn’s ÇaFleureBon Best Fragrances of 2020. There are some fragrances on here I haven’t tried and need to explore. If I win for the giveaway I would like Neil Morris Cafe and Sarah Horowitz Coeur de Sang. I am from the USA.

  • I’d like to try all of the scents you mentioned, especially the “Feel Good” perfumes– and _especially_ especially Mandarino. Lots of good ideas for scents to try here. If I win, I’d like SHP Shades of Green or Neil Morris’s Midnight Tryst.
    USA

  • Andreea Florica says:

Intimate Wisteria from the Vault collection sounds really good! I know that wisteria is used in some iconic perfumes of the 80s, but never had the chance to smell them to see what this flower is all about.
    Many thanks!

  • I thought that Ermano and Michelyn’s best fragrances of 2020 list was really great since it was really great since it had such a wide scope of types of fragrances included. From the Vault Collection, I would like to win Café since those notes together sound amazing and from Sarah Horowitz Parfums, I would like to win Bliss. I live in Florida, US.

  • I thought that the list was wonderful for all the fragrances that it included. If I were to win, I would really like to win Dark Season from Neil Morris while I would like to win Nectar from Sarah Horowitz. Since I live in the US, I am eligible for both giveaways.

  • Thank you, Cafleurebon, for this long-read with thoughtful reflexions and many new names. I am not gonna mention everything that I learnt from the article, but the most intriguing for me is the newcomer Voyages Imaginaires. Overall the year was crucial, but – in many ways – abundant, too. I hope the Truth will soon come out and people will see what this was/is all about…
I live in the EU, and in case of blind luck, I would like to win OCTOBER by Neil Morris.

  • In a year that felt restrictive on many levels, I am continually uplifted by following the creations of independent perfumers. Sarah McCartney’s creations at 4160 Tuesdays stand out for me. Due to being part of her Scenthusiasm group, I got The Darkest Bloom – an imagined dark flower with an intoxicting plum-like aroma. Gothic, but not gloomy. A reminder that in the darkest of times, beauty and grace abound more. 2020 was an opportunity to find balance and tune into what is most important in life.
Thank you so much for this comprehensive and considered article. My list of wanted perfumes just keeps growing.
Should I be blessed to win, I would love to meditate while enjoying Neil Morris’ Drifting. I live in the UK. Happy 2021, all xx

  • wandering_nose says:

Woody, spicy and balsamic fragrances have been helping me regain some internal peace amidst the unbelievable happenings of 2020 – I would be honored to win Cathedral by Neil Morris.
Thank you for the draw. I am in Ireland

  • What a rich and comprehensive selection of fragrances! I am happy there is no worst list. Just positive vibes here. I am looking forward to trying many of these fragrances. I am particularly interested in Luminous Lemurs. It is a delightful name!
If I were the winner, I would choose Perfect Veil.
    I live in the USA.

  • Iuno Feronia says:

Thanks for this article, so many perfumes I didn‘t know, so I have much to smell when the parfumeries will Open again. Thanks for the draw I live in the EU.

  • Congratulations to the ÇaFleureBon HALL OF FAME: OLIVIER DURBANO, NEIL MORRIS AND SARAH HOROWITZ-THRAN. I adore Sarah Horowitz fragrances. I own The Now and find it so beautiful and cozy with that fig note. I would love to get The Hereafter so I can own another from the SHP Evolution line.

    I live in the USA.

  • Quite an impressive list considering the year this has been. It’s been a good source of hope to see how people pivot and make the most of a bad situation. Perfume was one thing we could keep going through the mail and was often a highlight. If I were to win, Cathedral by Neil Morris would be my difficult choice. I live in the USA.

  • Thanks for another beautiful piece, Michelyn and Ermano. I always look forward for articles like this. Indeed 2020 was a year of all sorts, emotions and hardships. I’m glad it’s over and I know 2021 will be a better year. Thanks for this draw, I’d love to win Dark Season by Neil Morris and The Origin Story by Sarah Horowitz. – CA, USA

  • Thank you for making this horrible year a little bit more aspirational. Being in lockdown and constantly wearing masks has taken toll on everybody. Perfume can ease everything just a little bit.
I would love to win Cathedral by Nwil Morris.
    I’m in Slovenia, EU

  • Nice, quite the read. Many of the choices I haven’t tried personally and some have my interest. Though this year has been a tough one, there have been some good in it as well. Hope things will get better soon. I’d probably go with one of Neil Morris’ fragrances. Not sure which on yet though. Thanks, Ca

  • Honeydew Crenshaw says:

Great afternoon tea break read – so much to learn and know lies ahead! My preference would be Neil Morris – Carhedral as incense in scents has really set me on fire this year,
