Joseph and Kaya of Six Scents: the winners of 2011 FiFi awards
J & K : We began the project with our medtiation's on gardens in a historic and mythical sense. Gardens have long symbolized notions of luxury, status/privilege, freedom, sexuality, and fertility. Centered around this brief the Standard Spa Miami was asked to fill out a perfume profile envisioning what type of garden would best represent the property. From there several discussions were held after which David presented samples of different fragrance directions from which 'Verde' and 'Incense into the Sea' were selected.
Incense into the Sea was centered more on the surrounding elements, bracing notes of the sea air with warm mineral sands and sun bleached Teak add a salty woody sensuality
A mystical veil of incense floating on notes of the sea with minerality and salty woody warmth. Touches of drenched humid greens from the garden "walls." Incense (Olibanum), Teak Wood, Sea Salt, Leafy and Violet Greens.
Verde was created as a vision of the Lush Green 'walls' that enclose the garden space and envelop the observer with lush tropical humidity dripping down from green leaves
Incense into the Sea: Scents of palm fronds, ferns, trailing vines, as well as sea moss and lush white flowers, crisp green galbanum resin and elegant dried iris roots wrapped with orchids, jasmine and enlivened by sparkling bergamot and lemon. Anchored by a frame of blond woods and touches of shiso leaf and lavender add a pungent surprise.
David Apel created many niche,celebrity and luxury fragrances
Why did you choose David Apel, a perfumer with Symrise and what is he like?
J & K : We worked with Symrise in the past with our inaugural collection and we were extremely delighted to work with David Apel for the first time on this scent collaboration with The Standard Spa Miami. David Appel has created some iconic fragrances in his career and he was an absolute pleasure to work with. David is an extremely knowledgeable perfumer and I was very impressed by his ability to create several unique fragrance directions from this concept. David is also a great communicator and it was great to hear him explain his creative process on these perfumes.
Did you reference the Hanging Gardens of Babylon?
J & K : We referenced not only the Hanging Gardens of Babylon but also imagery and artwork inspired by other historic gardens; real or imagined. The property of the Standard Spa Miami Beach and the inspirations behind it's design also served as key visual references.
How did the collaboration start and how is it coordinated?
For three years now Six Scents has worked with The Standard Spa Miami to bring something special to their guests for each Art Basel Miami Beach. This year we thought it would be nice to offer guests a take home souvenir, and what better item than perfume! I think David really nailed it with these two fragrances and we had so much great feedback during our time in Miami.
This is your third installation. How does the creative process differ than creating a fragrance for general sale?
J & K: As a company we believe in creating experiences , not just products. From the beginning we have always made each launch event a multi-sensory experience. We approached the installations at The Standard Miami Beach with the same creative starting point (this notion of gardens). Ultimately the installations exist as a physical accompaniment to 'Verde' and 'Incense into the Sea'.
