Temperatures are soaring here in the Pacific Northwest.The thermometer in my garden reads 90º F – in the shade! Every summer, as I slowly acclimate to the heat, I search for fragrances that will help ease the transition from the cold and rain that I love, to the breathtaking, sizzling oven that is summertime. Yesterday, as I was about to reach for my beloved Italianate Colognes and wet juicy Eau de Toilettes, I received a small package from Indigo Perfumery. The group of samples included an offering from a perfume house to Bon Parfumeur 602. From the first I was amazed that a single spritz of this fresh beauty was able to offer real and immediate relief from the scorching heat creating an instantaneous and most welcome illusion of cool.

The independent perfume house Bon Parfumeur was launched in June of 2016. Co-founder Ludovic Bonneton (formerly Head of Digital and E-Commerce for Yves Rocher) worked with a cadre of talented perfumers (Nathalie Koobus, Philippe Romano, Karine Dubreuil-Sereni, Corinne Cachen, Alexandra Monet and Benoit Lapouza) to create a total of fifteen very different fragrances.The perfumes are named by coded numbers – 001 to 901 – each numerical series referencing a different fragrance family. The bottles are simple and spare, and the labels are colored to reflect the contents. The scents in the Bon Parfumeur collection have been designed to mix, match and layer. The labels can even be personalized for gifts or to mark a special occasion.

Like all the offerings in this collection, Bon Parfumeur 602 features elegance and minimalism in composition. The 600 series refers to the woody fragrances family, but I find Bon Parfumeur 602 much cleaner than everyday familiar woods.

The sparkling opening of Bon Parfumeur 602 wafts a cold draft of citrus as the bitterness of grapefruit and the freshness of mint emphasize and underscore the scent profile of cedar. The use of mint in 602 is very subtle, just enough to suggest a blue-green coolness without resorting to ubiquitous toothpaste notes or reverting to chewing gum or peppermint tea. I am refreshed for a good twenty minutes before a wet sensation of juicy purple berries and black and red peppers add a suggestion of dampness and warmth to the perfume. The ever so slightly humid heart of Bon Parfumeur 602 remains in place for four hours functioning as my personal, fragrant air conditioner.

Breathing the cool mint-y green and blue air of 602 almost makes me forget the blistering heat. In Bon Parfumeur 602 the senses are bridged as the fragrance extends the olfactory illusion of cool to the sensation of cold on my skin, in effect repelling the heat! At about six hours, as Bon Parfumeur 602 begins to fade, grassy vetiver blends with swirling incense and a touch of patchouli, coloring this sultry summer evening in haunting shades of misty green.
