Abel Odor Nurture X Gray Label (Fanny Grau) Review + Try A Little Tenderness Draw

Modernity, minimalism, functional sustainable beauty. The tale of how Abel Odor Nurture drew first breath seems as organic as the fragrance itself. The point of convergence is Amsterdam, artistic nexus which creative director Frances Shoemack currently calls home. Nurture is the outcropping of the synergistic collaboration between former New Zealand winemaker Frances Shoemack, New Zealand-born, Brazil-based perfumer Isaac Sinclair and a company which creates organic clothing-as-comfort for wee ones based in Amsterdam known as Gray Label. The nose for Nurture is Fanny Grau, Isaac Sinclair’s partner (and mother of two children). Got that?

Frances Shoemack is passionate about wine AND perfume. A few years back she came across a video in which Isaac Sinclair voiced his fascination with the same, and that’s when she felt she’d found her nose. Each held strong beliefs regarding the use of ethically sourced aromatic materials which benefit the planet, and commenced creating fragrances; it was only a matter of time before Emily Gray was in contact, requesting a perfume “made by mothers for mothers” – a 100% natural eau de parfum for new and expectant mothers – for her Amsterdam-based boutique.

There are solid reasons to support such endeavors: Gray Label goes to significant lengths to design unfussy, timeless clothing for children from infancy to 10 years of age in an ageless color palette of mix-and-match. Everything they make is ecologically sound, stylistically classic and fully functional; it allows children to BE children and comfortable in non-restrictive garb.  Abel Odor Nurture eau de parfum is intended to soothe caregivers and their charges via beneficent aromatics and subtlety: “NURTURE is a soft, calming fragrance that reminds a mother to take care of herself while also taking care of her little one.”

Thoughtful attention has been paid to ensure that Nurture’s fragrant components form a harmonious whole – the notoriously soothing and tonic orange blossom (many European baby care products are scented with it!), those marvelous jasminoides which calm ruffled nerve endings (mimics the effects of Valium without the 96-hour half-life), lentisque’s terpenic citrus woodiness for clarity and freshness. Bulgarian rose plays the tender consort here; far from a diva rôle, she helps round the more incisive edges of a vibrant ginger (relieves nausea, cramping, elevates mood) and effusive lentisque/mastic resin. East Indian sandalwood is the blessed tie which binds – renowned for its meditative character and buttery heartwood, it has healing properties and is reputed to enhance mental alertness (something many parents of young children find flagging by day’s end). If all this doesn’t sway you, perhaps the fact that everything listed is sustainable will – responsibly sourced so as not to pillage our planet, andecologically produced.

What does Abel Odor Nurture smell like? It is lovely, unpretentious, simple and delicate (after a rousing initial spritz of vivacity). While it clings to the skin it does linger a bit longer than many natural perfumes; its sillage is discretion itself. To my nose it is a tonic redolent of Eau d’Hongrie (Hungary Water), a popular eau de toilette circa 1370 thought to revive lagging spirits and beauty’s decline (there is no rosemary in Abel Odor Nurture as there is in Hungary Water, but the mastic element possesses a similar herbal/balsamic pungency). As is the case with other Abel Odor fragrances, it is universally appealing with no prescribed gender specificity. Abel Dor Nurture is thoroughly modern, fresh and always appropriate – especially when one needs a little tenderness. Notes: orange blossomBulgarian rose, lentisque, jasmin sambac, gingerEast Indian sandalwood

Many thanks to Ann at Indigo Perfumery and Europerfumes the US Distributor for my generous samples of Abel Odor Nurture! My nose is my own…

  • Odor Nurture sounds like it’s delicately soothing. We all need a bit of cuddling once in awhile. Thanks for the review of Abel’s perfume and another fabulous draw! USA

  • Awesome review. The notes of jasmine, iris, ginger and refined woods make me think about tenderness and mother’s love. Thanks for the chance, i am in the EU.

  • As a mother I appreciate this. When they are little, I don’t want to put on something heavy or overly synthetic. I do not like smelling my perfume on my children. I love that this is all natural, and the notes sound perfect for a new mother. Great art direction with the Mart Cassatt…. <3 Thank you for the review and very generous draw. I'm in the USA.

  • I am intrigued by the mention of the Hungary Water – being Hungarian, and knowing the benefits of the magical spring waters of my mother country.
This scent sounds like just the tonic for humid and wet summer days like we are having in Melbourne right now.
I also like the story behind it, the detail and thought that has gone into every step. Its good to hear of a shift towards more thoughtful creation.

Would love to enter the draw, I am in Melbourne Australia

  • Hi great review ,fragrance sounds wonderful …lots of notes i love except rose 🙂 . Not sure how many fragrances have sustainable and responsibly sourced ingredients that are also andecologically produced , its good on the environment so I can appreciate theyve done that . One of the smells reminds me of a mothers love I guess baby powder strangely enough. Thanks for giveaway . Canada here!!

  • Another wonderful review. Nuture sounds calming and classic. I like the notes and the use of sustainable materials. I associate the smell of baby shampoo with that just after bath scent. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the USA.

  • Awww, this sounds like such a comforting fragrance! The aroma I associate with tenderness and a mother’s love is the scent of Shalimar. My mom’s been wearing it since I was a little girl. Every time I smell it on anyone, it immediately brings me back to when I was a child, growing up in Brooklyn, NY.

    I live in the USA.

  • Thanks for another great review, Ida. I love this – ‘What does Abel Odor Nurture smell like? It is lovely, unpretentious, simple and delicate (after a rousing initial spritz of vivacity).’ Nowadays, strong projection and spices in fragrances are so famous, simple and natural new fragrances are always welcome. The scent of associate with tenderness and a mother’s love is white florals and musk. Thanks for this opportunity. – California, USA

  • Monica Beaton says:

Beautiful review and artwork again Ida and Michelyn. We all need nurturing sometime, and finding a fragrance that feels comforting and is worn only for your own pleasure is a gift. I associate comfort with food unfortunately – the smell of my Mom baking on a Saturday afternoon. Her way of showing love and bringing comfort. Vanilla, spices, creamy goodness. Abel Odor Nurture sounds like a lovely delicate skin scent – perfect for those moments when a hug and some love is required. I live in Australia. Thank you for a lovely review – this is a brand I know little about – and for another generous giveaway.

  • Ooh, maybe that’s why I love orange blossom, the effects of Valium without the 96 hour half life! Lovely artwork, Mary Cassatt always does mother and children and daily life so well. Lovely review, artwork, thank you for the draw, in the us

  • I love using natural products and love orange blossom, ginger, sandalwood, and the other notes, too. I associate motherhood with the note of sandalwood since it is a nice warm fragrance with a touch of creaminess. I live in the USA.

  • I love the scents from Abel, especially Green Cedar, but I haven’t tryed the Nurture yet. This is a great idea to make an unpretentious fragrance designated specially for young mothers and using only natural ingredients. Until the age of 6 I recognized my family members by their own personal scent, so those are the scents I associate with parents, home and family. The most nurturing scent I know from the perfumery is Cedre Bleue by Yves Rocher.

  • I love this…’It is lovely, unpretentious, simple and delicate’. Also love that it is universally appealing and lasts long. Very fresh and modern.
I always associate lavender with tenderness and a Mother’s love.

    I live in California.

  • This fragrance really does sound like it is nurturing , cozy , and snuggly. I’d go for something not too old-fashioned but still homey, like warm milk. Thanks for the draw! I live in the USA.
